At around 4:30 a.m. yesterday, Senate Republicans used a procedural maneuver to block (for now) the landmark For the People Act.

The For the People Act would fight the Republican Party’s racist, undemocratic assault on our democracy by strengthening the right and ability to vote, ending partisan gerrymandering, getting billionaires and Big Business out of elections, and more.

Leading the charge *against* democracy was none other than Senator Ted Cruz of Texas — along with Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and others.

Back in March, Cruz — as Donald Trump and so many of his adherents are wont to do — said the quiet part out loud when he outright admitted that if Republican voting restrictions were ended by passage of the For the People Act, Republicans would basically never win another election.

Cruz is widely disliked even by other Republicans.
None of that stopped Ted Cruz from doing something disgusting on the floor of the United States Senate in the middle of the night — namely, going on record as being *for* racist and undemocratic voting restrictions by preventing the Senate from even debating the For the People Act.

It’s time for Ted Cruz to take a hike.

Tell Ted Cruz:

You have made it crystal clear that you do not believe in real democracy, that you do not respect the Constitution, and that you will support racist, undemocratic voting restrictions if it helps Trumpists like you get elected. If you have so little regard for our democracy, why even bother coming back from recess? Why not just resign?

Add your name.

Thanks for taking action.

For democracy,

- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen

P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
