Friend,
It's been four years since white nationalists arrived in Charlottesville, Virginia, and held a "Unite the Right Rally." They stoked hatred and fear. They caused destruction and the tragic death of counter-protester Heather Heyer. Their actions were beyond reprehensible.
Former president Trump claimed these were "very fine people on both sides." His words were hurtful, wrong, and dangerous. Instead of condemning the violent actions of self-proclaimed neo-Nazis, the former president made excuses and fed the flames of hatred. It's no wonder that white supremacists felt emboldened to storm our nation's Capitol building just a few years later.
The words and actions of our leaders have long standing consequences, and they last beyond when those particular leaders leave office. Our work to fight back against hatred and injustice must continue.
Friend, hate has no home here. But it's going to take all of us to root out these dangerous ideologies. I remain committed to doing my part and fighting for equality and justice for all and defending our democracy from corruption in Congress.
I hope you will join me in this fight by condemning hatred whenever you see it and demanding justice whenever you can.
It's an honor to represent you,
Derek
