Law Enforcement News Deputy Dragged By Car After Traffic Stop On 5 Freeway Near Castaic; Suspect Fatally Shot By Deputies A man is dead after trying to evade law enforcement by allegedly dragging a deputy who pulled him over with the car he was driving. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, a deputy performed a traffic stop on a male driver in the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway near Castaic early Thursday afternoon. LASD says the suspect took off on foot before jumping back into the car he was driving. The deputy who tried to stop him got stuck on the suspect's car and was dragged onto the freeway as the suspect tried to take off. The deputy opened fire at the suspect, ultimately killing him. The sheriff's department said that a handgun was recovered at the scene where the suspect was sitting. The deputy who was dragged by the vehicle was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released. The harrowing incident shut down the 5 Freeway before reopening all but one lane hours after the shooting. FOX 11 Gunman Kills Man Outside Melrose Avenue Shoe Store And Flees In Toyota Jayren Bradford aspired to be a musician, but like a lot of budding artists in L.A. he had a day job to pay the bills — selling shoes at a Shoe Palace outlet on Melrose Avenue. When a confrontation broke out around midday Wednesday at a shoe raffle being held outside the store, the 26-year-old tried to defuse the situation, his co-workers told KTLA news. But the peacemaker instead became a victim when at least seven people confronted him on the street, one firing a single shot that sent Bradford crumpling to the asphalt, according to friends and a mobile phone video first played on KTLA-TV Channel 5. He died at a local hospital. Police are looking for a gunman in dark clothing who fired the lone shot, or anyone else with information about the shooting. Detectives also asked the public to be on watch for the getaway car, a silver Toyota Camry with a temporary license plate, BC10D32. Los Angeles Times Family Of Slain Reseda Bank Exec Demands DA’s Office Charge Suspect With Special Circumstances Murder The family of a bank executive found beaten to death in her Reseda home is calling on Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón to file special a circumstances murder charge against the suspect in the crime. Anthony Duwayne Turner, 52, of Westchester, faces murder and first-degree robbery charges in the killing of 48-year-old Michelle Avan, but her family says the DA’s office did not add the additional charge, making him ineligible for a harsher sentence if he is convicted. Turner was described as Avan’s ex-boyfriend and colleague who the family believed was a “stand-up guy,” according to a statement from the family’s spokesperson. “In contrast (her son) found his mother’s lifeless body beaten and left alone by a man who is a murderer, and the family does not want the photos of Anthony Duwayne Turner in a suit and tie perceived to be a stand-up guy to paint a different picture,” the statement read, referring to a photo of the suspect circulated in media reports. Turner allegedly entered his former partner’s home in the 19300 block of Covello Street on Aug. 3 and killed her before leaving the next day. Her son eventually discovered her body. KTLA 5 Reseda Army Veteran Convicted Of Plotting To Bomb Supremacist Rally In Long Beach A federal jury Wednesday convicted an Army veteran from Reseda for attempting to bomb a Long Beach white supremacist rally. Mark Steven Domingo, 28, was found guilty on the fifth day of trial in Los Angeles federal court of providing material support to terrorism and attempting to use of a weapon of mass destruction, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. As a result of the guilty verdicts, Domingo faces up to life in federal prison. Domingo, who has been in federal custody since his arrest in April 2019, is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson on Nov. 1. The investigation into Domingo was prompted by his online posts and conversations in an online forum in which he expressed support for violent jihad, a desire to seek retribution for attacks against Muslims and a willingness to become a martyr. After considering various attacks — including targeting Jewish people, churches, and police officers — Domingo decided to bomb a rally scheduled to take place in Long Beach in April 2019. As part of the plot, Domingo asked an accomplice — who actually was working with the FBI as part of the investigation — to invite a bomb-maker into the scheme. Los Angeles Daily News Man Shot To Death At East Los Angeles Illegal Marijuana Dispensary A man was shot to death at an illegal marijuana dispensary in East Los Angeles. The shooting was reported at about 5:55 p.m. in the 4100 block of Whittier Boulevard, near the Santa Ana (5) Freeway, according to Deputy Miguel Meza of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of his next of kin. The shooting in the 25400 block of Oak Street was reported at 4:16 p.m., according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Ortiz. A 911 call directed officers to an apartment where the body of an 18-year-old man was found. The victim, whose name was withheld, was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives learned that the two building residents got into an argument, Ortiz said, adding that the older man was arrested and a firearm recovered at the scene. Further details were not immediately available. The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to the Lomita sheriff’s station and booked. The answer is no. But there is no place else to go.” Durst, on trial for the 2000 killing of his best friend Susan Berman, has never been charged in the disappearance of Kathie Durst, who was later declared legally dead. But prosecutors have been allowed to present evidence that Durst killed his wife and then killed Berman when she was about to tell authorities what she knew. He testified that he never saw or heard from his wife again after watching her step onto the train platform in the New York hamlet of Katonah near their home on Jan. 31, 1982. KTLA 5 Southern California Surf School Owner Accused Of Killing His 2 Kids In Mexico A community is left stunned after the owner of a popular Santa Barbara surf school was arrested on suspicion of stabbing his two young children to death with a wooden stake in Mexico. Matthew Taylor Coleman, 40, was arrested after the bodies of his 3-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl, were found Monday morning by a farmworker at a ranch near Rosarito in Baja California, said Hiram Sanchez, Baja California’s attorney general. Prior to the gruesome discovery, police in Santa Barbara said Coleman’s wife had reported them missing and said she was concerned for their well-being. Coleman and the children had checked into a Rosarito hotel on Saturday, but video footage showed them leaving before dawn on Monday, authorities said. Coleman later returned alone later that morning and then left the hotel for good, authorities said. He was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents while crossing into the United States from Mexico at the San Ysidro checkpoint and remained in federal custody, Mexican authorities said. The girl had been stabbed 12 times, and the boy was stabbed 17 times, Sanchez said. A blood-stained wooden stake also was found, authorities said. Coleman could face Mexican charges of aggravated murder. FOX 11 As More Licenses To Grow Cannabis Are Added, Illegal Growing Has Also Risen In California Recreational cannabis sales began in January 2018, and while many have played by the rules, the illegal growth and sale of the plant continues to undermine those following the rules. State license issuance began in 2018, but data isn’t available for that initial year because they were issued as temporary licenses. Data sets begin in 2019, when 12-month annual and provisional licenses began to be issued, using the online licensing systems. Licenses remain active for one year, at which point they can be renewed for an additional 12 months. This list displays counts of when the licenses were first issued, but not each time one was renewed. Marijuana is legal for adults to use in 18 states and Washington, D.C. Medical marijuana is legal in 37. Most recently, New Mexico, Virginia and Connecticut legalized recreational cannabis. Since its establishment in 1983, the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting has had more than 110 law enforcement agencies involved, making it one of the largest law enforcement task forces in the U.S. Los Angeles Daily News Nearly 80 Missing Children Found In New Mexico During Multi-Agency Operation A multi-agency operation led to the location and recovery of dozens of missing children in New Mexico. Nearly 80 children between 5 and 18 years old were found, the U.S. Mashals Service tweeted on Monday. In a press release issued on July 21 by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the operation dubbed Operation Rescue Me was initiated on May 1. So far, 78 children have been found and two are still missing. Three minors were recovered and the 75 others were located, the press release stated. According to ICE, recovered minors are those who were active in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system as missing and/or runaways. These children have since been returned to their guardian and removed from the NCIC system. The operation is still ongoing, according to U.S. law enforcement. FOX 11 SDPD Officer Paralyzed In 2003 Shooting Memorialized As A ‘Warrior’ A Year After His Death On Nov. 12, 2003, San Diego police officer Daniel Walters was on patrol when he spotted another officer responding to a domestic violence dispute in the Southcrest neighborhood. As Walters arrived at the scene, a gunman was threating another officer with a revolver. That officer scrambled to take cover behind his patrol car and yelled a warning to Walters and his patrol partner. Walters struggled with the gunman and was shot in his neck. The officer fell to the ground and, moments later, was run over by a passing motorist. The injuries from that day left Walters paralyzed. He died nearly two decades later — on April 23, 2020 — from injuries related to the shooting. He was 53. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, a memorial service was delayed until this year. On Wednesday, the late officer and former professional baseball player was remembered by loved ones and colleagues at a memorial event at Shadow Mountain Church in El Cajon. It started around 7 a.m. with a procession of patrol vehicles that made its way from San Diego State University to the church. A large flag hung over the street in front of the building, on Greenfield Drive and Madison Avenue, where dozens of uniformed law enforcement personnel gathered before the service began. San Diego Union Tribune North Carolina Officer In Critical Condition After Shooting, Gunman In Custody A Forest City police officer is in critical condition after he was shot Monday while responding to a call about an armed man. According to WYFF, Officer Jamie Hill underwent surgery and was in critical but stable condition on Tuesday. Hill was shot in the abdomen between his vest and other protective gear, police told reporters. Two other officers were with Hill at the time of the shooting, but were not injured, according to the report. The suspect, 20-year-old Akeil Franklin, is charged with three counts of attempted murder and felony assault on a police officer with a weapon. PoliceOne Ghost Guns Sought By Violent Extremists, Tied To Thousands Of Potential Crimes, Feds Warn Untraceable, homemade firearms commonly known as “ghost guns” are turning up at potential crime scenes by the tens-of-thousands and have become popular weapons of choice among terrorists and violent extremists, according to leaked report from federal law enforcement officials. The flyer, meant for distribution among various law enforcements agencies around the U.S., comes from the Joint Terrorism Assessment Team (JCAT). It highlights the growing nexus between ghost guns and crime, including attacks and plots orchestrated by terrorists, extremists and hate groups. JCAT is a partnership between the FBI, the National Counterterrorism Center, and Homeland Security. The six-page document, obtained by The Trace and verified by NBC Bay Area through federal law enforcement sources, details how nearly 24,000 nonserialized firearms were recovered by law enforcement from potential crime scenes from 2016 to 2020. “The number of PMF recoveries from 2018 to 2019 doubled among prohibited persons and felons,” the report states. Missing serial numbers are one of the tell-tale signs of a ghost gun, which are frequently built from kits that can be legally purchased online without a background check because the unassembled parts aren’t regulated like a fully assembled firearm. NBC Bay Area Public Safety News 'Unlike Anything We've Seen': California Fire Officials Plead With Residents To Prepare For More Dangerous Wildfires California fire officials pleaded with residents to remain vigilant over the next few months of the state’s fire season, pointing to “another bout” of weather conditions that could bring dry lightning to the Dixie Fire zone, which has already burned more than half a million acres. The forecast is a concern in the “near term,” Cal Fire Director Thom Porter said Wednesday afternoon, but added fire officials are aware that there is a “long peak season” still left in the year. Porter warned residents that officials will be “at this for months to come,” and urged residents to make sure they don’t create sparks that could ignite another blaze. “If there is even a blade of grass near you, that is enough to start a fire these days. The motion was originally introduced by Council President Nury Martinez and Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell last Wednesday, August 4. Steps needed before it becomes law: The motion goes to the city attorney and he will begin drafting the ordinance, the city attorney will work on the language of the ordinance, and once the city attorney has drafted the ordinance it goes back to the city council for another vote. The motion would require eligible individuals to have received at least one dose of the vaccine to enter indoor public spaces, including restaurants, bars, retail establishments, fitness centers, spas, and entertainment centers such as stadiums, concert venues, and movie theaters. County Government Jobs U.S. citizenship will no longer be a requirement for many Los Angeles County government jobs, including department heads. On Tuesday, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion allowing the county, with a few exceptions, to hire noncitizens to lead county agencies — excluding the chief probation officer — and for any other county jobs where state or federal law doesn’t mandate citizenship. Immigrants who lack legal status remain ineligible to work for the county. Tuesday’s motion, by Supervisors Hilda Solis and Sheila Kuehl, extends eligibility for county jobs to lawful permanent residents and those with work permits.
