We recently launched our campaign to pass the National Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. This much-needed legislation would ensure domestic workers are included in common workplace laws while creating new protections and stronger ways to enforce them.
The bill, co-sponsored by Senators Kristen Gillibrand and Ben Ray Luján and Representative Pramila Jayapal, will create a national standard that provides the respect, dignity, and recognition that all domestic workers deserve.
10 states, including our recent win in Virginia, and 2 major cities have already passed domestic workers bills of rights and protections. We continue to push for bills of rights in more states, including our recent launch in New Jersey, and cities as well as federal recognition and protection for domestic workers.
Power Up for Care
We have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure home and community care jobs are good, family-sustaining jobs and that our loved ones can seek the care they need to live and grow older with dignity and respect. We need Congress to seize this moment and deliver a reconciliation package with a total $400 billion investment in home and community-based services (HCBS) — an investment that will strengthen our care infrastructure by creating 1.1 million new jobs each year over the next decade and ensuring true, equitable economic recovery for all.

A Win for DC Domestic Workers
Last week domestic workers in Washington DC, along with their allies and other groups of workers throughout the city, won $41 million in DC's annual budget for direct cash assistance to excluded workers! In DC, there are at least 15,000 workers who are excluded from federal unemployment benefits and COVID stimulus checks because of their immigration status, because they work in the cash economy or because they are returning from incarceration.
This money will begin to be distributed in the fall and will help meet the deep financial need that many excluded workers face after 17 months of a pandemic with no help.
Winning Human Rights Protections in NYC
The New York City Council recently voted 41-2 to include domestic workers in the New York City Human Rights law. This is a historic win for the 60,000 domestic workers who were not previously protected under the law.
This bill will protect home care workers, nannies, and house cleaners and will prohibit discrimination in New York City. NDWA began advocating for this bill in 2018, and the New York Chapter and local affiliates organized workers and amplified the need for domestic workers to be included in these human rights protections.

#CareCantWait Day of Action
Our Care Can’t Wait Day of Action in DC was a huge success. Supporters marched, celebrated homecare, and shared the stage with speakers like Rev. Barber and Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh. Additionally, caregivers, care recipients, elected officials, influencers, and supporters participated in over 40 actions in-person and digitally!
The event was people power coming to life, proving that organizing is indeed the tool we need to win and create an economy that works for everyone.
Communities of Care
In partnership with Caring Across Generations, Hand in Hand:The Domestic Employers Network and the Care Can’t Wait coalition, and artist Paola Mendoza we recently presented “Communities of Care”, an art installation of miniature homes representing symbolic communities of care squads around the country.
The installation transported viewers into the reality of care that takes place in our homes and communities and was a physical manifestation of the care teams that are hard at work in our homes but also, the interconnected nature of our care via rows of homes.
