Today, the Census Bureau will release the data states will need to begin redrawing their congressional and state legislative maps for the next decade. That means today is the day Republicans start trying to take back the House by manipulating the maps -- and it’s also the day we stand our ground and get ready to fight them every step of the way.

Republicans aren’t going to waste any time in jamming through highly partisan, manipulated maps in states where they have full control. They know that if they had to compete on an even playing field, they’d be far less likely to have the numbers they do now in Congress and in state legislatures across the country.
This issue goes to the very heart of our democracy. If Republicans are able to command lasting majorities even without winning a majority of the votes, then the system isn’t serving the voters -- it’s serving the politicians and their special interests.
Our plan is to fight back by making the public aware of exactly what the map manipulators are doing, mobilizing our supporters to testify at redistricting hearings in favor of fair maps, and even supporting plaintiffs in lawsuits where necessary.
It’s a big undertaking -- but thankfully, we have years of experience under our belt already. In 2017, we set out to build a movement that could end partisan and racial gerrymandering once and for all. And we’ve had some big wins along the way:
- We helped flip 11 governor’s offices and six state legislatures.
- We helped bring down Republican supermajorities in three state legislative chambers.
- We successfully mobilized our community to help pass bipartisan redistricting reform.
But all of that work has been building up to this moment. The maps that are drawn this year will be in place for the next decade -- and whether they’ll fairly represent our communities or lock in Republican supermajorities is up to us.
