This was an important week for our campaign. On Tuesday, we officially filed our quarterly fundraising numbers with the FEC for the first time since former Republican Congressman Scott Taylor announced he was running against me.

Today, I have some good news to share: With your help, and with grassroots support from across Virginia, we raised $1.8 million — shattering the record for Virginia Senate contests in an off-year third quarter.

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you for your support. Every dollar matters when we're up against Donald Trump's GOP, and there's no way we would have made it this far without you.

This is incredible grassroots momentum, but frankly, I need you to be a part of it if we're going to be successful on election day 2020. Let's face it, that's a lot of money we're talking about, so I think I ought to tell you briefly about how we're planning to use that money to win. As you read this, our campaign is laying the groundwork for 2020 — hiring key staffers; setting budgets for TV, mail, and digital ads; and planning our field outreach efforts that will take our message directly to Virginia voters. At the same time, I'm working hard to support our General Assembly candidates who are on the ballot next month, because flipping the legislature in 2019 is so important to expanding health care access, funding public education, and finally bringing about commonsense gun law reform here in Virginia. It will also send a strong message across the Commonwealth and around the country heading into the 2020 election.

All of this costs money, and none of it would be possible without grassroots support from folks chipping in with gifts of $5 or $10 or whatever they're able to manage. So, I want to personally ask you to make that first contribution and help us keep up the grassroots momentum we had this quarter. Can I count on you?

When I ran for re-election in 2014, we faced a massive influx of special interest attacks. It was a tough campaign, and we only won by the narrowest of margins. With the Trump campaign targeting Virginia and Republican opponents now officially in the race, we have to assume 2020 will be even tougher. More importantly, we need to do everything we can to beat Donald Trump and keep Virginia blue in 2020.

That's why I'm going to keep working hard to build this campaign and grow our grassroots team of supporters who make it possible. This is a good day for our campaign, but we've got to keep fighting if we're going to be successful. Thanks for all you do to make that possible.
