Dear John,
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the ways in which public health disparities are shaped by racial, climate, and economic injustice, and how critical the fight for justice is to keeping New Yorkers healthy and safe. This year, ALIGN is proud to announce our first set of honorees for the 2021 Movement Builders Awards: Assembly Member Karines Reyes and Senator Michael Gianaris for their work championing frontline workers and the groundbreaking NY HERO Act, legislation that will protect and empower workers to fight this pandemic and whatever may come next.

As a nurse and legislator, Assemblymember Karines Reyes always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with frontline essential workers. Throughout her career, she has been an active union member, fighting for issues relating to public health and workers’ rights. From time to time, Assemblymember Reyes puts her scrubs back on to take care of patients at Einstein Hospital suffering from COVID-19 and other ailments, as a per-diem nurse. Along with the NY HERO Act, Assembly Member Reyes also passed legislation to provide whistleblower protections to health care workers and establish a lookback period for firefighters suffering from job-related cancers.
As Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Michael Gianaris has been a progressive champion, fighting to level the playing field between everyday New Yorkers and powerful private interests. He has authored and fought for critical legislation protecting workers (including the NY HERO Act), improving affordable housing opportunities, directing more revenue to the struggling MTA, making voting easier, and bringing more fairness to the criminal legal system.
