Help Out Grand County!

Image

Colorado Dems Chair Morgan Carroll was in Grand County, CO over the past few days, and in addition to visiting with the Grand County Democratic Party, Morgan saw firsthand how the 2020 East Troublesome Fire devastated Grand County. Not only that, but she saw how the county is still struggling to recover.

People are still displaced from their homes. Clean-up is still happening. Countless acres of public lands and home for wildlife is still recovering. Grand County needs our help.  We need to act on climate change, grow front range allies to protect head water communities (where all of our water comes from), invest in infrastructure to protect their water quality, and make sure their insurance claims are handled promptly and fairly.  If you want to help the Grand County Democratic Party, click here!

Child Tax Credit: When Will Your Second Payment Arrive?

CBS Denver

This month’s Child Tax Credit payments will go out this week. Last month’s check from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) arrived on July 15 for those with direct deposit, or soon after for those dependent on the U.S. postal system.

...

Advance payments will continue next month and through the end of the year, thanks to the American Rescue Plan passed back in March.

Remember -- Colorado Republicans like Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck, and Doug Lamborn all voted 'No' to helping Colorado families.

Meanwhile, all of Colorado's Democratic members of the Congressional delegation voted 'Yes'!

Support for Democratic School Board Candidates

As an initiative, Democratic Education Initiative of the Colorado Democratic Party (CoDEI) has played a leadership role in the examination and discussion of important education policy issues for twenty years! We also serve as a resource for candidates running for education positions or on education issues.

The CoDEI is asking all county party chairs and members of the State Central Committee to help us identify Democrats who are running for school boards this year.  The CoDEI is happy to advise, coach, and support these candidates.  The sooner we know who is running – or who is thinking of running – the sooner we can be of assistance. Please email us at [email protected] with names and contact information of any Democrat you know is a candidate or is contemplating becoming one for their local school board.

Additionally, each odd-numbered year, the CoDEI holds an event in late August to give Democratic candidates for school boards around the state an opportunity to speak to fellow Democrats. This year, the event will take place via Zoom on Friday, August 20 from 1:30-3:30.

You can register via Mobilize: https://www.mobilize.us/democraticeducationinitiative/event/389078/

GOP Senate candidate Peter Yu defends ‘This racism thing? It’s a lie' statement

Yahoo! News

Republican Senate candidate Peter Yu defended his statement at a campaign event in Golden, Colo., last month, suggesting the #StopAsianHate movement has been “politically exaggerated.”

...

Howard Chou, co-founder and chair of Colorado Democrats Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Initiative, later issued a statement criticizing Yu’s comment, saying racism and violence against the AAPI community are real. Chou also called Yu out over how he wants to “perpetuate a myth that racism doesn’t exist and wants to blame survivors and victims.”

“As someone who has experienced hateful violence first hand and seen it expressed toward my whole family, I find Peter’s statements very shameful and shows in volume how out of touch he is. Peter does not speak for me nor many members of our AAPI community and should apologize and retract his statement immediately,” Chou said, adding the political candidate should apologize and retract his statement.

Volunteer of the Week

Image

My name is Tom (T-mo) Morrissey and I’m a volunteer-aholiic! I’m currently managing the new CDP Tech Support System which I set up and configured during the 2020 Election. I am also serving on the Board of Animas Charter High School here in Durango. I have since 2009. I really enjoy, and get great satisfaction, working with people from all over the state, both candidates and counties. VAN is NOT and easy program to learn. Helping you all learn how to use it more efficiently, so you can spend less time on technology and more time campaigning and registering voters, is my way of helping Dems get elected.  I’m on my 3rd retirement 😊. I spent 30+ years in IT, including 13 at Microsoft.

My passion for volunteering began as a young boy following along with my Dad as he volunteered with our Church and the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). I could see the way his face would light up as he worked with others to help these organizations be more successful. I’m not sure if Dad ever said this directly; but a mantra I carry with me, and have tried to pass on to my sons goes something like:

“… It is your responsibility to give back to the world, but never forget that it is also a privilege ...”

Although I volunteered, sporadically during my career years, it really began in earnest after I retired (the 1st time) in 2008 and moved to Durango. I began volunteering for the Obama Campaign here as a data entry volunteer, here in La Plata County. As I became more proficient in VAN, I ended up overseeing the data entry volunteers and then, usually starting around 10PM, began creating lists and cutting Turfs for the next day’s door knockers and phone callers. Finally, I’d get to leave around 1:30 AM. This was 7 days a week all of October until the election. Weird as it sounds, I really enjoyed those times. The energy in our office was incredibly contagious. I spent 6 years as Communications Chair for La Plata County Dems ,and then began volunteering with CDP last August providing VAN Tech support and helping counties and campaigns implement TextOut.

I guess the let down after the election, left me wanting to do more. I started back up again in January driving the implementation of your Help Desk software and now spend 2-4 hrs daily managing it and working support tickets, even doing a little training from time to time. It is certainly not glamorous, and may sound boring, maybe a little crazy to you, but as I mentioned before, it is what I can best do to help get our candidates elected. I take pride in and get great satisfaction  this.

I encourage all of you to engage with your respective County Parties and Candidates to find out how you can “give back” according to your particular skill set. No job is too small, or any less important that others. It’s all about community working together to help improve our environment, our heath care, and most importantly, the quality and equality of our lives and those of our families and neighbors.

Give it a try, I bet you will like it.
