[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

Friends –

Yesterday, the Senate passed the bipartisan infrastructure deal.

It is a historic, bipartisan achievement – just as President Biden promised the American people when he ran. The $1.2 trillion investment is a major step toward repairing our crumbling infrastructure and starts to put us on a path toward a greener future — which has never been more urgent.

The scope of this bill is not something Washington has seen in a long while. Does it have everything we want? Absolutely not. But I think it’s something we should be proud of.

Republicans had the House, Senate and White House not long ago and claimed infrastructure was a major priority, but they failed to get the pieces together.

Now in just eight months, Democrats are proving that, when we are given the opportunity to lead, we can make real progress.

But we’re not done yet. The plan, as we’ve publicly stated from the beginning, is that the priorities that Republicans refused to support would be addressed in the next phase of the package – the Build Back Better bill.

The current target for this bill is $3.5 trillion, and it will include key investments in things like child care, paid leave, climate investments, and other programs that will help everyday Americans.

There’s a lot that my colleagues and I are going to push to include here, and in addition to more rail funding, another thing that I’m fighting for that has gotten a bit less attention is an investment in community violence intervention programs. This would be funding for programs that are working to reduce gun violence across the country. We know their efforts can have a major impact on keeping our communities safe, but I need my colleagues to know that this is a priority as well.

Can you add your name today to tell my colleagues you want to see funding for community violence intervention programs in the Build Back Better bill? They need to hear that this is important to you as well.

I hope our majority made you proud today because this could not have happened without all the work you did in the run-up to the 2020 election. So many folks put their all into helping Democrats win back the Senate, and now our goal is to continue to deliver the meaningful change and progress that you expect.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
