To help lift America out of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps: A New Deal program that put millions of Americans to work improving our country’s public lands, national forests and parks, and building roads, bridges and dams—many still in use today.

Today, as we face the catastrophic threat of climate change, it’s time for a new CCC: A Civilian Climate Corps. (Add your name if you agree).

Here’s how it would work: Over the next five years, an equitable and diverse group of 1.5 million Americans would complete federally-funded projects that help communities respond to climate change and transition to a green economy.

It’s one of those policy proposals that just makes sense. We should give young people the opportunity to serve in protecting and preserving our land, forests, water, and other critical natural resources, and be rewarded for those efforts with on-the-job skills training and a good-paying salary that can help pay for college, put a down payment on a home, or start a business.
