Let's talk about corporate political action committees, also (perhaps better) known as corporate PACs.
Corporate PACs are formed by “special interests”—groups that seek to influence policy to further specific and defined priorities—to funnel millions of dollars into our elections. Last election cycle, corporate PACs donated $170 million to propel policies that’ll boost their bottom lines, even if those measures will hurt families, fuel the climate crisis, and threaten small businesses.
With checks that big, John, it doesn't take a whiteboard to connect these contributions to certain elected officials' hesitancy to rein in Big Pharma, Big Oil, and the banks. This hesitancy and undue influence is why it's so important that candidates commit to NOT taking any corporate PAC money, and that’s why I’m proud to say that I’ve rejected all funding from these sources since my first election in 2018.
My decision to reject corporate funding does make fundraising a bit more challenging—but I don’t care. I don't fight on behalf of special interests or corporations, and their large contributions won't ever influence me. I work for the American people, and therefore my campaign runs on the power of the small-dollar, grassroots donations we receive each day.
