John —
Yesterday, the Senate passed the bipartisan infrastructure bill. This achievement was historic, and it is just the start.
This moment is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in our state and our nation. This first bill will allow us to upgrade our roads and bridges, expand broadband, and bring good-paying jobs to North Carolina.
But there is more to do. A second bill to advance President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda is in the works, and I believe it is critical that it includes an extension of the child tax credit.
The second round of direct payments from the child tax credit is supposed to hit bank accounts soon. It will allow folks to breathe a little by giving them some more room in their budgets to buy groceries and school supplies, pay rent or mortgages and cover unexpected expenses like medical care.
This tax cut is helping us cut childhood poverty in half. It will lift nearly 140,000 children out of poverty in North Carolina.
In the Senate, I’ll fight to make this tax cut for working families permanent, but right now, it’s urgent that Congress, at minimum, extends this child tax credit beyond one year.
Thank you for adding your voice to mine. Together, we can change lives for the better.
