AEE, Michigan EIBC Applaud MI Power Grid Initiative ([link removed] )
AEE and state partner Michigan EIBC applauded the announcement from Governor Gretchen Whitmer that the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) would launch a multi-year initiative to modernize Michigan’s electric power system to maximize the benefits of clean, distributed energy resources for Michigan residents and businesses. "The vision Gov. Whitmer and the Commissioners are pursuing will give households and businesses in Michigan a cleaner, more flexible, more responsive electric power system," said AEE Managing Director Ryan Katofsky. "With experience in similar initiatives in states including Ohio, Illinois, New York, and Rhode Island, AEE looks forward to contributing to this important initiative.” “Michigan EIBC is excited for the opportunity to work with the Commission and other stakeholders toward a modern, distributed, interconnected, grid of the future,” said Laura Sherman, President of Michigan EIBC. “Our member companies are developing innovative technologies, decreasing costs for customers, and providing beneficial grid solutions. We’re pleased to see the Governor and Commission creating a space to explore these issues and implement policies that will help increase competition, reliability, resilience, and advanced energy deployment, all while decreasing costs.” Click here to continue reading the press statement.> ([link removed] )

How Wholesale Electricity Markets Work – and Don't ([link removed] )
Two-thirds of the nation’s wholesale electricity sales occur in a competitive market managed by a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) or Independent System Operator (ISO), with over 200 million customers in these areas and over $120 billion in annual energy transactions taking place. Under the Federal Power Act, these markets are overseen by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), which ultimately determines the rules for how wholesale electricity is bought and sold in the marketplace. RTOs/ISOs develop the market rules that dictate whether and how energy resources can participate and compete. Wholesale electricity markets should allow all resources to compete on price and performance, as the Federal Power Act requires that the rates, terms, and conditions of service governing wholesale competitive markets be “just and reasonable” and not grant any “undue preference or advantage.” Many market rules, however, are outdated, having been designed with older technologies in mind. Those rules can favor incumbent technologies and disadvantage newer and more innovative energy options – that is, advanced energy. Click here to continue reading the blog post.> ([link removed] )

Webinar - Distributed Energy Resources in Wholesale Markets: What They Are Doing Now; What They Could Do, Given More Opportunity to Compete ([link removed] )
Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) – such as battery storage, electric vehicles, microgrids, and both standalone solar and solar-plus-storage – are known for adding value onsite or to the local distribution grid. Increasingly, however, these resources, when aggregated together, are not only technically capable of providing energy, capacity, and ancillary services to wholesale electricity markets but can do so cost-competitively. A recent AEE report, Putting Distributed Energy Resources to Work in Wholesale Electricity Markets, provided five case studies of aggregated DER participation in wholesale markets, showing what they can do now, and suggesting what they could do with market rules that allowed them to compete fully with traditional resources. This webinar will bring these case studies to life, with DER companies and other experts discussing current opportunities and roadblocks across RTO/ISO regions.
