INSIGHT

Breaking Down Barriers to Build Better Career Paths

A recent community conversation co-hosted by PEAK and EPIP celebrated the release of Career Journeys in Philanthropy, our latest Journal which showcases some of the pioneers whose work has made grantmaking more efficient, effective, and equitable. In these highlights, three philanthropy leaders comment on the barriers to greater equity in the sector, revealing how simply being more attuned to those around us would go a long way in driving change.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT

PEAK Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain Virtual Coffee Hours

This past year, staying connected with colleagues and peers has been critical to transforming philanthropy to meet the current crises. Our PEAK Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain chapters have led the way by hosting virtual monthly coffee hours to help members do just that, creating spaces where members come to get and share advice and support with peers. Members continue to gather to explore topics like work-life balance, participatory grantmaking, trust-based philanthropy, and much more. We'd like to give a special shout-out to the crew in Salem, Oregon which provides a smaller, niche space for members working in their area. Kudos to both these chapters for continuing to lead the way!

GOVERNANCE

2022 PEAK Board of Directors
Nominations and Elections Update

The PEAK Board of Directors currently includes 17 volunteer leaders from our community—your peers in philanthropy—who represent the membership and set the strategic direction for the organization.

Each year, the Governance Committee can choose whether to add members to the board. In 2022, only one board member will be leaving the board. We also have deferred a candidate from the 2021 nominations process who has already been selected by the Nominations Committee and approved by the Board. The Board is also considering changes to streamline its processes and update its committee structure.

During this time of transition, and with full confidence in our current directors, the Governance Committee has decided not to run a full nominations process this year, with plans to resume the process for 2023. 2022 Board nominations will be announced later this year and the election will be held next  spring.

If you are interested in volunteering with PEAK, check out our Volunteer Board or email the team at [email protected]

PEAK in Community

The latest news about our sector partnerships and how PEAK is advocating for more equitable grantmaking practices at conferences, convenings, and community conversations.

Submittable's new Impact Audio podcast kicked off with  the episode "Philanthropy, Impact, and the Future of Grantmaking," which features PEAK's Satonya Fair in conversation with Sam Caplan, Submittable’s Vice President of Social Impact.

Satonya joined the Ford Foundation's grants management team retreat, hosted by Director of Grants Management Jim Gallagher, to talk about opportunities to operationalize equity, network and grow through the PEAK community, and innovations in grants management. We'd like to extend a special thank you to Jim for helping us to secure Darren Walker for our 25th Anniversary panel!

PEAK was a special guest at Philanthropy Northwest's Philanthropy 101 Summer Series, which provides staff who are new to the sector with an orientation to philanthropy, foundation leadership and governance, and grantmaking, and a space to debate current issues and explore the various roles within philanthropy.
