This week’s IPCC report made it clear: we need a Green New Deal, and we need it now.

We wanted to make sure you saw Ed’s email from Monday.

Since this week’s climate news from the IPCC, we’ve seen an incredible show of support for our movement for a Green New Deal and environmental justice — but the real work is still just getting started.

In case you missed it, we hope you’ll read Ed’s note below — and if you’re able, add your $3 contribution to help make sure we have the resources we need for this fight.

Friends -

Early this morning, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) — the United Nations body responsible for assessing the science of the climate crisis — released its Sixth Assessment report.

The findings? Catastrophic.

The report emphasized what we’ve known for years: the climate crisis is “unequivocally” caused by human activity, and without significant action, in the years ahead we will continue to see hotter temperatures, rising sea levels, more extreme weather events, increased flooding, wider-spread wildfires, and more searing droughts all across the planet.

The UN Secretary General called the report “code red for humanity.”

This IPCC report must be our final warning: no community will be able to hide from the impacts of the human-driven climate crisis.

But we don’t have time to agonize — we must organize and listen to the young people, working people, frontline communities, activists, and scientists demanding action on climate.

The IPCC made clear that the only way we can hope to mitigate the disastrous consequences of climate change will be through bold, immediate steps to deeply reduce carbon emissions.

Put simply: we need a Green New Deal, and we need it now. That’s why I’m asking you today:

If you can, make a $3 contribution to help me continue leading the fight for environmental justice and a Green New Deal in Congress and beyond. The time for bold climate action is now, and we don’t have a moment to waste.

The Republican Party has absolutely no interest in doing anything that will hurt the bottom line of their friends in the fossil fuel industry.

I’m proud that I was re-elected because of young people who rose up to demand that our government take action on the climate crisis. It’s time for Democrats to do something with the power and responsibility the American people have entrusted us with.

Combating the climate crisis is THE environmental, economic, national security, and moral issue of our time. The good news is that our movement is growing stronger by the day, and so long as we stand together, we will make our agenda for climate justice a reality.

So please, add your $3 contribution or anything you can afford to help us make sure we have the resources needed to organize for this fight. We would not ask if it were not so important.

As always, thank you for all you do for our movement.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey
