Law Enforcement News LAPD Officer Injured By Dog During Investigation Near Dodger Stadium A Los Angeles Police Department officer was hospitalized Tuesday after he was attacked by a dog during a narcotics investigation near Dodger Stadium. LAPD officers were conducting the investigation at about 3:20 p.m. near an apartment building in the 1300 block of Sunset Boulevard when the dog attacked the officer, said Officer William Cooper of the LAPD Media Relations Division. The officer shot and killed the dog in the attack. The officer was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries, treated and listed in stable condition, Cooper said. LAPD Force Investigation Division personnel were investigating the shooting. No further details regarding the attack or the investigation were immediately available. No suspects were taken into custody in the narcotics investigation, Cooper said. MyNewsLA.com LAPD Searching For Suspect In North Hills Shooting That Left 1 Dead Police are searching for a man who walked up to another man and shot him as he sat inside his car on a quiet residential street in North Hills late on Monday. The shooting occurred in the 9600 block of Columbus Street, a leafy neighborhood just southeast of Sepulveda Boulevard and Lassen Street. LAPD officers patrolling the area heard several gunshots at around 11:45 p.m. When they got to the scene, they found the victim still in his car, a white Toyota Corolla that was idling in the middle of the street. The victim was shot once — police got him out of the car and attempted to perform CPR, but the man was dead. He has not been identified, but police estimated the man was about 25 years old. Detectives said they searched the neighborhood and found surveillance camera footage showing the shooter walking up to the victim and firing multiple times at him before he ran from the area. He was last seen heading west on Superior Street. Los Angeles Daily News Woman Killed By Hit-and-Run Driver While Trying To Help Cat Lying In South L.A. Street: Police A driver has been arrested in a hit-and-run crash that killed a 60-year-old woman who stopped to help a cat lying in a street in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw area, police said Tuesday. The deadly incident unfolded around 2:50 a.m. Monday after the woman stopped her vehicle on Crenshaw Boulevard near Coliseum Street, where she had spotted the feline in the road. She put on her hazard lights, got out of the car and went to care for the cat, according to the Los Angeles Police Department news release. While the woman tended to the animal, another vehicle traveling southbound swerved to avoid slamming into the victim’s car and ended up hitting her instead, police said. The driver of that car — identified as 26-year-old Kateara Treggs of Inglewood — pulled over, got out and recovered a car part that had fallen off her vehicle in the collision, according to the release. Police allege Treggs saw the dying woman down on the roadway, but instead of rendering aid, she left. Treggs was arrested around 6:30 a.m. Monday and booked into jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, according to police. LAPD also tracked down the vehicle and said they are holding it for evidence. KTLA 5 Fatal Car Crash Kills 2 People In Baldwin Hills, Injures 2 Others A deadly collision between two vehicles in Baldwin Hills Tuesday night claimed the life of two victims and injured an additional two. The crash was reported at about 7:05 p.m. at 3761 S. La Brea Ave., between Obama Boulevard and Coliseum Street, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene, and two women were taken to a hospital in fair condition. The names of the dead were not released pending notification of their next of kin. The cause of the crash was not immediately known. CBS 2 LA City Councilmen Introduce Motion To Ban ‘Ghost Guns’ A motion to request an ordinance prohibiting the possession, purchase, sale, receipt and transportation of “ghost guns” in Los Angeles was introduced on Tuesday, Aug. 10, by Los Angeles City Councilmen Paul Koretz and Paul Krekorian. Ghost guns, also known as kit guns or 80-percent guns, are virtually untraceable weapons that can be made at home using legally purchased parts to complete the 80% already assembled. They are sold at gun shows and online. The unfinished parts are not required under federal law to have serial numbers or a background check to purchase. More than 40% of guns confiscated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and one-third of crime guns recovered by the LAPD in Los Angeles in 2020 were ghost guns, according to Koretz. Ghost guns were used during the 2013 shooting at Santa Monica College, in which six people, including the shooter, died; a series of shootings in Tehama County in 2017, in which five people died; the 2019 shooting at Saugus High School in 2019, in which three students, including the shooter, were killed and three others were injured. The ATF recovered 10,000 ghost guns in the U.S. in 2019, 2,700 of which were in California. NBC 4 Video 14-Year-Old Boy Found Shot To Death Inside Compton Camper Trailer Authorities in Compton said an investigation was underway after a 14-year-old boy who had been missing since Sunday was found shot to death inside his father’s camper trailer. Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were called the 4200 block of East San Luis Street, located near the intersection of Compton Boulevard and Atlantic Avenue, just before 9 p.m. Arriving deputies discovered the teen in a camper that was parked in an alley suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper torso, Deputy Tracy Koerner of LASD’s Information Bureau said. The family said they contacted the sheriff’s department about the missing boy on Monday. The teen’s father found him unconscious inside the trailer while searching for his son on Tuesday, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Sheriff's officials said the shooting was being investigated as a homicide. The incident was reported just after 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of La Brea and Centinela Avenues, according to Inglewood Police Department Lt. Geoffrey Meeks. When officers arrived, they found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported both victims to the hospital in unknown condition. The shooter fled the scene and no suspect description was provided. CBS 2 Bell Gardens Police Release Video Of Suspect Vehicle In Fatal Hit-And-Run Police Tuesday released video of the suspect vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that left a 58-year-old man dead in Bell Gardens. Mark Hindmand was riding his bicycle traveling eastbound on Florence Avenue, near Wilcox Avenue, at about 1:55 a.m. on July 18 when a gray Honda SUV traveling westbound struck him head-on, according to Bell Gardens Police Department Investigator Ryan Esparza. Hindmand was thrown from his bicycle and struck a utility pole before he landed on the sidewalk. He died from his injuries at the scene. The Honda fled the scene traveling westbound on Florence Avenue following the collision, Esparza said. County Offers $15,000 Rewards In East Los Angeles, West Puente Valley Killings The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved two $15,000 rewards Tuesday for information leading to gunmen in the unrelated killings of an 18-year-old man apparently shot at random in East L.A. and a 23-year-old man gunned down in a West Puente Valley robbery. Supervisor Hilda Solis recommended the reward in the July 5 shooting death of 18-year-old Diego Ortega-Reza in East Los Angeles. Ortega-Reza was with two friends in a car around 12:45 a.m., all on their way home from a Fourth of July party, according to Solis. The car was being driven westbound on Cesar Chavez Avenue near Indiana Street in East Los Angeles when someone fired several shots into the rear of the vehicle. One of the shots struck Ortega-Reza in the head. Investigators said it was unclear whether the shooter was in a vehicle or on foot. Solis said there was no indication the victims did anything to provoke the attack. Ortega-Reza was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead five days later, according to coroner’s records. MyNewsLA.com Man Pleads Guilty To Benefits Fraud Scheme, Sentenced To 48 Months In Prison A man who stole public assistance benefits such as cash and food aid that should have gone to individuals and families in need in Los Angeles County was sentenced to four years in state prison and will have to pay nearly $900,000 in restitution, the state Attorney General’s Office announced Monday. Jawuan Antonio Gibson, 38, who was arrested at a Los Angeles hotel in 2019, pleaded guilty to four counts of grand theft, one count of possessing access card making equipment, and two counts of accessing a computer to commit fraud. He also admitted a special allegation that through his statewide scheme he caused more than $500,000 in losses. California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the plea and sentencing in the electronic benefit transfer fraud scheme, for which Gibson was sentenced to 48 months in state prison and ordered to pay $883,529 in restitution to the California Department of Social Services. The CDSS will identify and reimburse the victims from throughout California, including those in Los Angeles County. MyNewsLA.com Murder, Abuse Charges Filed Against Southern California Foster Parents A California couple was indicted in connection to the death of a teen and an investigation that uncovered several years of alleged physical abuse and neglect of children and adults who were under the couple's care. On Monday, Riverside County DA Mike Hestrin announced the county's criminal grand jury has returned an indictment against the owner and operators of the Morris Small Family Home, a now-closed foster group home for severely disabled children near Murrieta. Michelle Morris Kerin, 80, and her husband Larry Kerin, 79, were indicted on "a variety of charges involving several victims including murder, child endangerment likely to cause great bodily injury or death, dependent adult endangerment likely to cause great bodily injury or death, and lewd acts on a dependent adult," according to Hestrin's office. Only Michelle Morris Kerin is being charged with murder in the indictment, Hestrin's office said in a press release. Morris faces a second-degree murder charge for the 2019 death of foster child Diane "Princess" Ramirez, who spent an agonizing night in the home, vomiting blood. Despite specific instructions to get the girl to the emergency room if that happened, Morris insisted the 17-year-old girl would be fine, according to a state report. FOX 11 Deadly Shootings Highlight Airbnb’s House Party Problem A shooting at a Sunnyvale, Calif. house left an 18-year-old dead and another person injured last weekend. The incident raises questions about how Airbnb is monitoring listings. Officers responded to a music disturbance from a large party on Saturday at 10:19 p.m., police said. When they arrived, they encountered an estimated 150 to 200 attendees, many who were ages 16 to 19. While officers were trying to figure out who the homeowner was, they heard gunshots. They found two adult victims, who were taken to a hospital, where one — identified as Elias Elhania, according to NBC Bay Area — died. The other person is expected to survive. Police confirmed to The Times that the property was being rented out through Airbnb. But Sunnyvale requires residents to apply to become hosts on the platform. Police said they have no record of an application for the property. Fliers posted on social media ahead of the party billed it as “Turn Up Pt. 2” and charged an entrance fee, according to the Mercury News. For girls, the party was free if they got there before 10 p.m., and $5 after that. For men, the price was $10 before 10 p.m., and $15 after. The flier said the party was to begin at 9:30 p.m., while the end time was stated as a cop and flashing light emoji, appearing to indicate the party would continue until the police shut it down. Los Angeles Times Prosecutor: Man Admitted Killing Chicago Officer At Traffic Stop A man charged with killing a Chicago police officer admitted to investigators that he pulled his handgun out of his waistband during a traffic stop and opened fire, a prosecutor told a judge Tuesday. At a bond hearing for Monty Morgan, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney James Murphy provided the most details yet disclosed about the weekend traffic stop in which Officer Ella French was killed and another officer was critically injured. A third officer fired back at Morgan, who did not attend Tuesday's hearing because he remains hospitalized. At the conclusion of the hearing, Cook County Judge Arthur Willis ordered Morgan — previously identified as Emonte Morgan — held without bond on charges of first-degree murder of a peace officer, attempted murder of two other officers, unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. “They didn’t have their weapons drawn, they weren’t firing on him, and callously (Morgan) shoots and kills one, and the other is in critical condition,” Willis said. Associated Press New York Cop Rescues Baby From Crash Near George Washington Bridge A Port Authority cop swaddled a 14-month-old baby boy in his uniform shirt as he and his fellow officers rescued the tot from a crashed SUV teetering on a barrier near the George Washington Bridge, officials said Friday. The wide-eyed lad was dangling from his car seat, secured by its straps, when Port Authority police found the grey Chevrolet SUV resting on two wheels at a 45-degree angle on the New Jersey side of the Bridge. The child’s mother and another woman were driving toward the famed bridge around 12 a.m. Wednesday when they lost control of the wheel and crashed into a jersey barrier, vaulting on top of the waist-high barricade, cops said. When Port Authority police arrived at the scene, the air bags had been deployed, officials said. Cops first removed the baby, who was only in his diaper. Port Authority Police Officer TJ McPike took off his uniform shirt and wrapped the child with it before passing the infant off to Police Officer Greg Rose, who comforted the boy until the his mother could be removed. County COVID Cases Expected To Climb As School Resumes With Routine Testing With Los Angeles public schools set to resume in-person learning next week with a weekly coronavirus testing requirement, public health officials warned Tuesday that cases are expected to climb in the region. L.A. Unified, the nation’s second-largest school district, resumes in-person instruction Monday. Students and faculty at several other large districts and universities with their own testing requirements will also be returning in the coming weeks. “We expect to see tens of thousands more test results each day, and in parallel with these we will see an increase in our cases,” L.A. County public health Director Barbara Ferrer told the county Board of Supervisors Tuesday. The news comes after Ferrer said last week that the latest surge appeared to be “leveling out.” Since then, the county’s daily test positivity rate has dropped more than two percentage points to 4.4%, while the case rate is hovering around where it was last week at 24 cases per 100,000 people. KTLA 5 West Nile Virus Detected In Los Angeles, Orange Counties The first West Nile virus infections of 2021 have been detected in Los Angeles and Orange counties. An L.A. County resident who lives in the South Bay was hospitalized for a West Nile virus-induced fever in late July and is recovering, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. And last week, the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District reported that a batch of mosquitoes in Fullerton tested positive for the virus, but no human cases of the virus have been reported in Orange County, spokesperson Heather Hyland said. “You never know which mosquito has it, so that’s why we’re stressing to people to wear [protective gear],” Hyland said. The mosquito-borne virus typically spreads to humans, horses and birds, according to the California Department of Public Health. It is common in California particularly in summer and early fall, when mosquitoes are most prevalent. Los Angeles Times COVID-19 Hospitalizations Rise Sharply Across Southern California As Surge Continues COVID-19 hospitalizations have essentially doubled across much of California over the last two weeks — a troubling trend officials say illustrates the pandemic’s continued potency amid an ongoing surge in infections. Increases of that magnitude have been seen in Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, state data show, straining healthcare systems to an extent not seen in months. Los Angeles Times Local Government News LA City Council Sets Goal To Add 25,000 Units Of Homeless Housing By 2025 The Los Angeles City Council approved a motion Tuesday setting a Homeless Housing Goal of creating at least 25,000 new housing units in the city by 2025. The motion, which passed 13-0, was introduced by Councilman Kevin de Leon as part of his "A Way Home" initiative on Jan. 13. It seeks to create resources including but not limited to permanent supportive housing and Project Homekey, as well as scattered site housing, tiny homes and safe parking, and other resources that don't qualify for the city's regional housing needs assessment goal as required by the state. "Too many people have died on our streets and in our alleys. Last week it was 1,383 individuals who lost their lives... today we're making a significant decision that will begin to erase our city's most indelible mark of shame," de Leon said.
