In testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee, we recently heard from two former top Department of Justice (DOJ) officials about just how close we came to a coup to overthrow democracy and keep Trump in power.
Both officials testified about how DOJ lawyer Jeffrey Clark attempted to use falsehoods and conspiracy theories to justify an outrageous memo directing Georgia legislators to call a special session to flip Georgia’s electoral votes toward Trump — despite the fact he clearly lost the state.
This all happened a mere days before the violent coup attempt on January 6th and shows just how close we came to the brink of losing our democracy.
The more we learn about the lead-up to January 6th, the more concerned I am becoming about the possibility of it all happening again, because Republicans remain embarrassingly loyal to Donald Trump, and his grip over the party has only increased.
That’s why it’s so crucial that he faces accountability before he gets a chance to run for president once more.
