Kroger is taking steps in the right direction for chickens. Here’s why that matters.

I’ll cut to the chase.

Kroger’s Simple Truth line has just committed to phasing out some of the worst abuses of chickens for 50% of its supply chain by 2024, with plans to keep expanding beyond this goal post. Because Kroger is the biggest grocery retailer in the United States, the tangible differences that this will make for millions of chickens is remarkable. Our work with Kroger is far from complete, but this is how change starts!

This commitment means that these birds will no longer be crammed so tightly together that they cannot move. It means that they will no longer be deprived of natural behaviors, which are vital to their quality of life. And it will spare many from the horrific cruelty of live-shackle slaughter. One thing is clear: Kroger took notice of a shifting landscape. Growing concern for animals fueled by caring consumers propelled this momentum—and Kroger chose to act accordingly.

This is only the beginning. Every day, thousands of caring people like you are rising up, and I’m personally witnessing signs that more companies are willing to work with us behind-the-scenes to unravel decades of extreme cruelty.

Kroger saw the writing on the wall. Let's make sure other corporations do, too.

Earlier this year, a huge investigation broke that exposed horrific animal abuse in Costco's supply chain. But if a giant like Kroger can take steps in the right direction for animals, what’s stopping Costco?

There's one place that Costco can't hide: Facebook. I'm heading to their page right now to make it clear that the time for change is now. Together, we can make this the biggest conversation on their Facebook page.

Don’t use Facebook? No biggie! You can still make a huge impact for chickens by sending a powerful message to Costco decision-makers. [[link removed]]

Now is the time to make the most of this breakthrough policy from Kroger. Together, let’s make sure Costco and other companies know that we’ll never give up this fight. Thank you for pushing on with us.

P.S. This breakthrough moment couldn’t have been achieved without your passion and support. This is only more proof that our movement is headed in the right direction. Thank you!

P.P.S. This commitment is an important first step toward a sweeping policy across Kroger’s entire supply chain. We’ll continue to work fiercely to strengthen their current commitment and ensure that they follow through over time. With you by our side, we’re up for this challenge.
