John,
Do you remember the panic felt by so many women after Donald Trump was elected in 2016? The fear that America would roll back the progress we’ve made towards reproductive justice and freedom. The concern that America would diminish opportunities for a woman to fully participate in creating, shaping and forming a life suitable just for her.
We witnessed the Trump Administration enable Republican governors across the nation to enact as many draconian anti-choice laws as possible. Even today, states are actively pushing extreme abortion bans in anticipation of the Supreme Court taking up a challenge to Roe v. Wade in the next few months. Fortunately, California has remained a haven for reproductive freedom through all of this turmoil -- thanks in large part to Governor Gavin Newsom.
In his first few years in office, Governor Newsom:
- Doubled the state budget investment in sexual and reproductive healthcare;
- Signed legislation to expand abortion access to students at California’s public universities;
- Signed legislation to reduce California’s alarmingly high rates of Black maternal mortality;
- And worked with other pro-choice Governors to defend reproductive rights nationwide.
Now, anti-choice Republicans are fighting tooth and nail to recall Governor Newsom and undo these hard fought victories.
In fact, Larry Elder, the leading GOP candidate to replace Governor Newsom called Roe v. Wade “one of the worst decisions that the Supreme Court ever handed down,” doesn’t believe in family leave after a parent gives birth, and uses his platform to uplift anti-science voices.
John, reproductive justice is on the ballot. Will you join me in phone banking to make sure Californians vote NO on the recall by September 14?

California is at an inflection point. We can continue being a safe haven for reproductive rights and push toward true reproductive freedom, or we can turn towards a more dangerous era. I know I’m not alone in never wanting to feel the way I felt after Donald Trump was elected, and I’m willing to put in the work to make sure we never do again.
