Virginia’s race for governor is in trouble.
Recent reports have far-right Trump Republican candidate for governor Glenn Youngkin polling within the margin of error against Democrat Terry McAuliffe. We cannot afford to have another Trump surrogate elected to leadership in the lead-up to the 2022 midterms when the Democratic majority in Congress is already so slim.
Throughout the campaign, Youngkin has been simultaneously courting Trump supporters’ votes and downplaying his endorsement by the insurrectionist-in-chief. But just this past weekend, Youngkin appeared at a Liberty University “election integrity” rally to shill Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 election.[1] It’s clear where Youngkin stands – and we can’t afford to have yet another right-wing governor in office working to suppress the vote.
We can’t assume that McAuliffe is a shoo-in because of his previous stint in the governor’s mansion, and we’re worried about a repeat of 2016: We cannot let progressive voters become complacent.
It’s vital that we have people from across the country involved in this race, as Virginia is a crucial bellwether state and the state elections this year will have a serious impact on the 2022 national midterms.
Take action right away to support McAuliffe’s campaign and make sure Virginians see Youngkin for who he really is: A far-right Trumpist whose goals have everything to do with gaining power, and nothing to do with good governance on behalf of all Virginians.
