“On August 8, 1970, the three pods of the Southern Resident orcas have come together for a superpod—usually a time of joyful reunion for the orcas. But on this day, the whale hunters are waiting for them.”

In the latest story in our new blog series, Emily Gambone dives deep into the Penn Cove orca captures, including the capture of Sk’aliCh’elh-tenaut, also known as Lolita, who is currently imprisoned in a tank in the Miami Seaquarium.
