A Republican victory in Virginia this November would provide the GOP with a roadmap for how to win without Trump on the ballot, which could have serious implications for the 2022 midterm elections. Republican nominees for the Virginia House of Delegates are campaigning on threats to roll back the progress VA Democrats have made:

- Republican Nick Clemente is challenging Del. Wendy Gooditis in HD-10. He is anti-choice and has pledged to cut funding for reproductive health.

- Republican Jason Ballard has vowed to overturn the progress Virginia has made with gun violence prevention legislation, while running against Del. Chris Hurst (HD-12), who lost his fiancée to gun violence.

- Republican Tara Durant—running against Del. Joshua Cole in HD-28—made news by falsely claiming that she and her child were surrounded and threatened by Black Lives Matter protestors while driving home. This discredited story and racist rhetoric are central to her campaign.

- Republican Ben Baldwin is running in HD-31 against Del. Elizabeth Guzman, and has built a campaign around misinformation about COVID-19 and the vaccine rollout.

The Virginia GOP is spreading conspiracy theories, campaigning on racial dog whistles like “critical race theory,” and attempting to roll back the incredible progress Democrats have made since 2019. If they succeed, we will see this playbook replicated in midterm elections across the country next year.
