Friend --
The late Congressman John Lewis wasn’t just a colleague of mine -- he was a personal hero and source of constant inspiration. I admired his tenacious lifelong fight for equality and justice. Before he passed, I was fortunate enough to make many memories with him, including one occasion where he impressed upon me to not despair and to always keep the faith.
As we witness the wave of anti-democratic voter restriction laws being passed across the country, his words have really stuck with me. State legislatures across the nation are undermining the very cause that Rep. Lewis advocated for throughout his entire life. Why? To advance a certain agenda? To silence certain Americans?
Rep. Lewis was right -- we can’t despair, and we’ll keep fighting to protect and defend the fundamental right to vote.
We must summon the strength and perseverance to continue Rep. Lewis’ lifelong fight for democracy. Please add your name alongside mine and sign the petition to urge Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.
Rep. Lewis played a major role in the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. But here we are, 56 years later, still fighting against discriminatory practices when it comes to voting rights.
The fight to prevent voter suppression and expand voting rights is urgent, friend.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act honors Rep. Lewis the best way possible -- it restores the federal approval process for new voting laws, therefore protecting
every American’s right to be heard in our democracy.
Our government should be doing everything in its power to protect voting rights instead of threatening it -- not the opposite.
This bill needed to be passed months ago. So please, add your name alongside mine to sign the petition demanding Congress pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act immediately.
In solidarity,
Antonio
