There is nothing that helps the Socialist Party so much as
receiving an occasional deathblow. The oftener it is killed the more
active, the more energetic, the more powerful it becomes.
--Eugene V. Debs
Comrades,
On Tuesday night, as Bernie Sanders made his triumphant return to
the campaign trail, we learned that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be
endorsing his run for the presidency in 2020. For those of us who
remember the night of her upset victory over Democratic Party flunky
Joe Crowley, the news brought back familiar feelings. Excitement,
sure, but mainly optimism—the hope that the better world we envision,
the one that we all deserve, is possible after all. But endorsements,
elections, and presidents can’t win socialism alone: only we can, and
only if we work together and fight for it. So let’s fight.
This Saturday, join us at Lake Merritt to talk to our neighbors
about Bernie and our demands for single-payer healthcare, guaranteed
housing for all, and a Green New Deal. And on Sunday, we’ll be hosting
a Democratic Socialism 101 event at Marston Campbell Park in Oakland,
perfect for new members and Bernie- or socialism-curious friends.
The pressure on AOC to endorse someone else—or no one at all—must
have been massive. Yet she chose to stand in solidarity with Bernie
and his agenda for the working class. Our fight against the
billionaire class and the political establishment is just getting
started, and there’s never been a better time to join in.
