John,
This week the Senate will vote on the framework of President Biden’s Build Back Better plan. A draft of the budget was just released and it covers many areas that we’re fighting for, including:
-
A multi-year continuation of the Child Tax Credit;
-
A pathway to citizenship for qualified immigrants including Dreamers;
-
Paid family and medical leave;
-
A significant reduction in health care costs and expanded coverage for the uninsured;
-
Tuition-free community college;
-
Universal pre-K and expanded child care assistance;
-
Vital nutrition and housing investments;
-
Clean energy initiatives;
-
And much more!
Once this bill passes a procedural hurdle, the Senate will begin a “vote-a-rama” where senators can offer unlimited amendments. It’s critical that we guard against amendments intended to undo the provisions we’re fighting for.
For example, senators would try and prevent immigrants from attaining legal status, or prevent immigrants from accessing the Child Tax Credit, even when their children are U.S. citizens.
Or, senators could cut health care investments in half, so that poor people continue to be denied Medicaid in some states and so that Medicare won’t cover hearing, dental or vision.
This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. Can you write to your senators today and urge them to reject any amendments that undo the progress working families desperately need?

My name is ________; I live in [TOWN] and I’m a constituent of the senator’s.
I urge the senator to support the budget resolution being voted on this week and to oppose amendments meant to chip away at the investments needed in our community.
I’m particularly concerned about potential cuts to investments in healthcare; affordable housing and food; the Child Tax Credit; education including childcare, pre-K and community colleges; paid family leave; clean energy initiatives; and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and other qualified immigrants.
We can afford these investments when the rich and corporations start paying their fair share.
Please share my thoughts with the Senator. Thank you.
Thank you for demanding the Senate be bold and make the investments we need, paid for by ensuring the rich and corporations finally pay their fair share!
