From the Desk of Trevor Potter
Dear John,

Every ten years, states redraw voting maps, ultimately determining who will compete to represent Americans in congressional and state legislative districts. Too often, politicians intentionally split communities into different voting districts to protect their own interests and silence voters’ voices.

Now, Campaign Legal Center is giving voters a tool to fight back: PlanScore.org. ([link removed]) PlanScore is an empowering online tool to measure voting maps and evaluate them for partisan impact.
You can use this tool yourself!

New district maps are going to be drawn soon: the U.S. Census Bureau will release redistricting data to the states on August 12, marking a key date in the community districting cycle that is upon us.

Voting districts drawn this year will shape our lives and our communities for the next decade. Unfortunately, the community districting cycle is frequently abused for partisan gain: politicians in many states manipulate maps to pick who votes for them. This is called partisan gerrymandering. Partisan gerrymandering isolates politicians from accountability, and it has real-world consequences for our communities and our daily lives. Americans need fairness in government representation and equity in the distribution of resources—partisan gerrymandering puts this at risk.

PlanScore is an empowerment project. We're bringing the ability to measure partisan gerrymandering directly to the people, and we’re giving advocates the tool they need to influence the process and demand fair maps during this critical map drawing year. Voters should be choosing their leaders, not the other way around.

What PlanScore can be used for:
* The site contextualizes the gerrymandering taking place this cycle by allowing visitors to click on states and compare them to other states or previous maps from the same state. PlanScore.org presents the most comprehensive historical dataset of partisan gerrymandering ever assembled, going back to the 1970s.
* PlanScore users can also upload GIS files with map information, which can be checked for partisan, demographic, racial and geometric features.
* Soon, as the 2021 map drawing cycle heats up, PlanScore will collect and analyze a library of new district plans as they are proposed in states nationwide.

PlanScore.org ([link removed]) is free to use—we encourage people to upload map files themselves and to use the site to advocate for Fair Maps.

Please help us spread the word! Please share PlanScore with your networks and on social media. You can share our posts on Twitter, ([link removed]) Facebook, ([link removed]) LinkedIn ([link removed]) and Instagram. ([link removed])

Communities should expect transparency and accountability from the map drawing process. We are confident that PlanScore will be indispensable in advocating for Fair Maps and raising awareness of how community districting impacts our everyday lives.

Onward,
