Key updates on our recent legal actions.
ACLU Supporter –
Our attorneys just made swift moves to defend the rights of immigrants on two major national and state-level fronts over the past week. And because things can unfold quickly, even in the span of a few days, we want you to have the latest as of right now.
Here are the key pieces to know about on our most recent legal actions over immigration – ongoing work that's fueled by our community of resolute activists like you:
First, we and our Texas affiliate filed a lawsuit, on behalf of individuals and organizations engaged in humanitarian work in border communities, challenging Governor Greg Abbott's racist and unconstitutional order directing state troopers to pull over people suspected of driving migrants. Governor Abbott's order is illegal and inhumane, and, if it goes into effect, it will keep people in Texas from engaging in all kinds of essential activities. It will cause particular harm to people seeking asylum, humanitarian volunteers, and border communities – and its enforcement will mean arbitrary detention, fines, and vehicle impoundment, along with a massive increase in racial profiling. That's why we're suing.
Second, the ACLU and other civil rights groups that previously sued the Trump administration over expulsions of asylum seekers under Title 42 will be heading back to court – this time against the Biden administration, after hitting an impasse in negotiations to end the policy. The policy itself – created by the Trump White House over the objections of health experts – weaponizes the pandemic to deny people the opportunity to seek safety in the United States. The Biden administration has had more than enough time to fix any problems left behind by the Trump administration, but it has yet to reverse this policy. It has left us no choice but to return to court.
ACLU Supporter, these two legal actions are not our first that we've pushed forward over this past summer on immigrants' rights, and they certainly will not be the last heading into the fall.
We're at a critical juncture on immigration right now. And until our government finally gets serious about building a system that is humane and just for all people and families hoping to call this nation home – our team of lawyers, advocates, and organizers won't let up.
Stay tuned for more updates on these important litigation efforts and on all our work to defend civil liberties across the country. You're pivotal to all of it.
Thanks for being with us in the fight,
