Help Stop the Use of a Cruel Poison to Kill Wildlife

Dear John,

Over 1.5 million animals were reportedly killed by the USDA's Wildlife Services program last year. The death toll included tens of thousands of coyotes and beavers, thousands of foxes, and hundreds of bears and wolves. The program uses an assortment of cruel methods, including chemical poisons. For instance, last year Wildlife Services reportedly killed nearly 8,000 animals with M-44s--spring-activated devices that spray sodium cyanide into an animal's mouth, causing a slow and painful death.

Last year, an article in The Guardian ([link removed]) documented Wildlife Services' indiscriminate use of poisons to kill predators, and the lasting consequences for animals, families, and communities. In 2017, 14-year-old Canyon Mansfield was out with his dog, Kasey, near his home in Idaho when he accidentally triggered an M-44. Canyon was sprayed with cyanide and sustained serious injuries, while Kasey suffered an agonizing death. Traumatized by the experience, the Mansfield family have become powerful advocates for banning these terrible devices.

Canyon's Law (H.R. 4951) has been reintroduced by Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) in the House of Representatives to prohibit Wildlife Services from using M-44 sodium cyanide devices on public lands.
