This World Lion Day, we’re celebrating the completion of Africa’s biggest boma!

With Kenya’s wild lion population under threat, Born Free’s new ‘mega boma’ in Amboseli, will protect livestock, promote co-existence with communities and save this iconic species for future generations.

Wild lions in Kenya have declined from 10,000 in the 1980s to about 2,500 today* - largely linked to retaliatory killings by local communities after lion attacks on livestock.

Since 2010, we’ve built 340 predator proof bomas, protecting 8,000 people and over 100,000 livestock - reducing lion killings to zero in the area!

The Mega boma is 500m in circumference with an area of 20,000m!  That’s nearly 5 acres – big enough to wrap around Lord’s cricket ground or a US city block, and will protect an astonishing 300 people and their livestock.

“This World Lion Day, we are thrilled to announce the completion of what we believe to be the world’s biggest predator proof boma!  That delivers more protection for more people and livestock, more security for lions, and is a huge step forward in the prevention of human wildlife conflict.” Will Travers OBE
