Dear MoveOn member,
Experts in fields ranging from public health to meteorology agree that we
are in the middle of a global climate disaster which is hurting and
killing millions of people annually and which will only get worse. Without
immediate action, it will upend life as we know it for hundreds of
millions of people.
The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report
outlines how many of the changes we are experiencing globally "are
unprecedented in thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years."^1
[ [link removed] ]The U.S. should acknowledge the damage the fossil fuel industry causes
and be a global leader. Tell President Biden, Congress, and federal
climate leaders to stop giving billions of dollars in subsidies to
companies that are destroying the planet and killing people.
Immediate action is needed to stop the global warming which is responsible
for powerful wildfires, storms, droughts, and many health problems—from
respiratory illness to heat-related deaths—facing everyone, from our own
communities to people around the world.

The fossil fuel industry is one of the biggest contributors to rising
temperatures globally.^2 The U.S. must immediately end the $20 billion in
government subsidies we give to these massive corporations like ExxonMobil
and Shell—and encourage U.S.-based companies and our global allies to
invest in a sustainable future.^3 This global problem requires a global
solution.
IPCC Co-Chair Valérie Masson-Delmotte says, "It has been clear for decades
that the Earth’s climate is changing, and the role of human influence on
the climate system is undisputed."^4
Furthermore, Co-Chair Panmao Zhai says that "Stabilizing the climate will
require strong, rapid, and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas
emissions, and reaching net-zero CO[2] emissions."^5
Public health experts also know how bad global warming is for human
beings.
* Heat-related illnesses and death will continue to be more frequent as
temperatures rise.^6
* Respiratory diseases will continue to be more frequent as air quality
worsens.^7
* Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and ticks will continue to be more
frequent as conditions for breeding and transmission grow favorable to
many species.^8
* Mental health impacts caused by living in vulnerable communities will
exacerbate the physical destruction caused by worsening conditions.^9
Everyone can see the increase in severity of flooding, storms, heat,
drought, and wildfires, but this is about more than burning forests and
rising oceans.
