South Bay Neighborhood Meeting

Thursday, August 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Neighborhood Meetings are part of DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program—our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study. This and all other South Bay Neighborhood Meetings are open to new and long-time comrades & community members who live in El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Lawndale, Alondra Park, Carson, and West Carson.

Our sixth South Bay Neighborhood Meeting will build on discussions and projects outlined in last meeting, and will include a focus on information for renters in connection with our ongoing ‘know your rights’ tenant canvassing in Torrance.

We’ll also spend time in political discussion on struggles for decommodified housing, grounded in this recommended reading: “Unmaking the Real Estate State” an excerpted chapter from Capital City (Stein, 2019, 18 pages); Grounded in a clear assessment of how the state uses and is used by capital (and the unaffordable consequences for working people), this chapter outlines a range of policy and political strategies to facilitate the transfer of private land to the public and drive structural changes in our urban political economy.

NIGHT SCHOOL – Lost Angles Part 4: Legacies of LA’s Third World Left

Image

Thursday, August 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

What if I told you that from the elected officials who manage the affairs of the bourgeoisie, to principled socialists who’ve soldiered on in proletarian struggles for decades, many figures in LA’s contemporary political landscape trace their lineage to radical organizations of the ’60s and ’70s?

The August 29th Movement, Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, El Centro de Accion Social Autonomo, East Wind — many of these groups were explicitly socialist organizations who organized largely along racial/ethnic lines and were part of what scholars call the Third World Left.

What were the material conditions and economic arrangements that shaped the development of these organizations? What kind of work did they undertake, and what fruit did it bear? How did their internal structures influence their external capacities? How did they relate to different class forces within nationalist movements? Through both firsthand accounts and secondary sources, this class session explores these questions as well as what all this means for socialists working in LA today.

Join the DSA-LA Political Education Committee for our fourth class of the Political Education Committee’s 5-Part Night School Series: Lost Angles Legacies of LA’s Third World Left on Thursday, August 12 at 6PM.

Each session features a brief, informal presentation followed by facilitated discussion designed to engage all levels and connect current events to foundational socialist concepts and debates.

Comrades are encouraged (but not required) to review recommended readings linked in the class reader aligned with session topic found here
