MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS August 3 - August 9, 2021 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Tuesday, it was announced that China held a welcoming ceremony for the arriving Russian military as the troops arrived to begin joint large-scale military exercises on the Chinese mainland. The drills are planned to start today and extend through August 13. On Wednesday, it was reported that Lt. Gen. Jon A. Jensen, director of the Army National Guard, visited the 100th Missile Defense Brigade in Colorado Springs on July 26. During the visit, he met with soldiers who informed him about the unit's homeland defense mission in space. Also on Wednesday, The Guam Daily Post reported that Japan's Defense Ministry is planning to deploy Ground Self-Defense Force missile units on Ishigakijima island by the end of Fiscal Year 2022. The decision comes amidst China's aggressive comments towards Japan about the seizure of Taiwan. On Thursday, Israel launched rare airstrikes on Lebanon after Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, launched 19 rocket attacks on Israel. Jets struck launch sites that housed Lebanese missiles used to attach Israel previously. Lebanon's President said that he would submit a complaint to the United Nations against Israel's actions. On Friday, Russia's Northern Fleet began conducting a new series of military drills in the Arctic. The new drills involve over 10,000 troops and a whole host of equipment used for ground and air exercises. According to a United Nations report obtained by Reuters on Friday, North Korea has continued to develop additional nuclear and ballistic missile programs this year. Despite the continuous economic sanctions that countries are placing on North Korea, the country continued to seek materials and technology for new systems. On Monday, a South Korean official confirmed that South Korea and the U.S. are planning to conduct a joint, computer-based military simulation despite discouragement by North Korea.
