President Biden extended the student loan moratorium until the end of January. That’s good, but it’s not enough.
We can’t just keep putting off the inevitable. Next year, folks crushed by student loan debt — debt that disproportionately affects women and people of color — will have to start paying again. After the personal and financial setbacks experienced by so many during this pandemic, now’s not the time to place more burdens on people.
45 million people hold more than $1.7 trillion of student loan debt. They need relief and we need President Biden to cancel student loan debt immediately. If you agree, sign our petition now calling on President Biden to get rid of student loan debt right away. He has the power to do it and we demand he take action. All it takes is the stroke of a pen.
Next year, millions of people across the country will be forced to restart making payments that they simply can’t afford.
This country was already experiencing historic economic inequality long before the COVID-19 crisis. One in four student debt borrowers were behind on payments even before the pandemic started. Canceling this debt is an economic justice issue, and one we must keep fighting for.
Forgiving student loan debt now would be a massive step towards true economic relief during this pandemic, and beyond.
In solidarity,
