Happy back to school, Friend!
So many Nevada families have been celebrating their child’s first day of
school with plenty of adorable photos across social media! While we
continue to deal with spiking COVID-19 cases from this ongoing pandemic,
it does warm our hearts to see parents, educators, and students all
working together to go back to school safely with masks, social
distancing, and those old enough being vaccinated.
For many families, schools are not just a place where their children
learn, they also serve as recreational and meeting facilities with
programs that benefit the entire community. Unfortunately, those of us
who’ve been through Nevada’s public education system can attest that our
schools are overcrowded and underfunded. So how can we actively
participate to ensure schools are adequately funded and not overcrowded? A
process that occurs once every 10 years: Redistricting!
Redistricting, the process of redrawing political district boundaries,
applies to all levels of governments where district elections are held.
This means that redistricting impacts many areas of our lives, including
public education. The Census Bureau announced that it will release
redistricting data from the 2020 Census on Thursday, August 12.
We are at a critical moment that has the potential to reduce school
finance inequities and equalize educational opportunities, while also
increasing racial/ethnic equity. But this can only happen with YOUR
participation. If school districts are drawn with meaningful community
input, it can help provide our communities a meaningful opportunity to
elect trustees who represent and understand the communities they
represent.
Be part of the process and take 5 minutes to complete [ [link removed] ]this brief survey
to help IPN and the school board trustees better understand your
community. And make sure you’re following IPN on [ [link removed] ]Facebook, [ [link removed] ]Twitter,
