Strong Family Ties an Antidote to Depression
Ping Chen, Senior Research Scientist and Kathleen Mullan Harris, Professor of Sociology, both at UNC Chapel Hill, write, "Recently we were interested in understanding how mental health changes from adolescence through mid adulthood. We wanted to see if we could identify family processes that might protect teens from depression in adolescence and later. We found that close and cohesive family relationships, understanding, and shared good times protected them then and later."
...
"Our findings indicate the mental health benefits of cohesive family relationships during adolescence last through midlife. Individuals who experienced positive adolescent family relationships had significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms from early adolescence to midlife (late 30s to early 40s) than did those who experienced less-positive family relationships.
...
"Living in a cohesive home, having someone around who understands and pays attention, and having fun together as a family can build up warmth, trust and attachment between the family members and adolescents and positive feelings for teens. The absence of parent-child conflict reinforces parental support and approval for them. Close relations may provide sources of social and emotional support that encourages the development of skills for coping with changing and cumulative stressors."

Julaine Appling, WFA president, challenges, "Mental health issues among teens and young adults are reaching frightening levels. Family breakdown contributes to this problem; but it’s very encouraging to know that a strong, loving family is a good antidote not only for a child’s present, but also for his/her future. Dad and mom, you are the ones who establish the climate in a home. Is your home safe and supportive?"

The UW Campus Free Speech Kerfuffle
"The University of Wisconsin Board of Regents voted [last week] in favor of amending administrative policy to require punishments for students who disrupt others’ speech.
"The scope statement for modifications to Chapter UWS 17, 'Student Nonacademic Disciplinary Procedures,' would penalize students who have 'materially and substantially disrupted the free expression of others.' More specifically, it requires schools to conduct formal investigations and disciplinary hearings after a student twice disrupts someone’s speech." Read more HERE.
On the other hand, "just after the vote was taken, a spokeswoman for Gov. Tony Evers said he continues to oppose the rules. The governor's opinion matters because any rule change proposed by the UW System cannot go into effect without his support." Read more HERE.
Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty has been involved with this issue, supporting it in concept while encouraging the Regents to clarify what constitutes disruptive behavior and to avoid specifying sanctions since each offense will require a nuanced response. We hope the Regents will heed this advice and proceed and that Governor Evers will ultimately approve this policy.
Parents Need To Get Ahead On This Issue
"Research shows that young people are as likely to see online porn accidentally as they are to actively search for it.
"That means that with the amount of porn that’s online today, it is actually easier for a kid to stumble across it than to search for it on purpose. And for almost 2/3 of the children, this first exposure to porn happens right in their own home."
"Another unsurprising finding goes to show the escalating nature of porn viewing. Children described how their feelings towards porn have changed over time. About 27% surveyed reported feeling ‘shocked’ the first time they viewed it, but follow up surveys revealed that just 8% remained shocked after the first time they watched it."

We don’t share this information to scare parents, but to shine a light on these important facts so safety measures can be taken, including talking openly to children about God’s plan for human sexuality and the dangers of porn. The TrueNorth—Freedom Project has some excellent resources for parents. We urge parents to get ahead of this issue.
