Despite Gov. Greg Abbott’s reckless executive order banning COVID-19 restrictions, some Texas local officials are bravely doing what they need to do to protect their constituents.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced last week that the city’s 22,000 employees would be required to wear masks inside city buildings where social distancing isn’t doable.
The Dallas Superintendent, Michael Hinojosa issued a temporary mask mandate for students and teachers to stop the spread.
Austin's leadership, from the mayor to city manager, is doing what they can to enforce vaccine requirements for city employees and enforce mask mandates.
It’s been five full months since Greg Abbott declared that we had reached “herd immunity” in Texas. But now, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their highest level since last summer before a vaccine was even available. And almost all of the hospitalizations are coming from unvaccinated Texans.
At the beginning of July, the seven-day average of hospitalizations in Texas was 1,591. That same number has since jumped to 9,027. In the same time period, the seven-day average for new daily cases has increased ninefold!
One thing is crystal clear: Gregg Abbott has failed to protect Texans from COVID-19. Instead, he’s wasting his time and our money on a racist border wall on a southern border.
