Last week, chances to extend the federal eviction moratorium looked bleak. The policy kept millions in their homes during the pandemic, but as the House left for recess, it appeared that these families would be left vulnerable to cruel eviction at any point.

Thankfully, Representative Cori Bush refused to give up. While her colleagues left for recess, she slept on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to pressure Congress and the President to take action. Her unwillingness to leave people behind was inspiring to many, and soon after her protest began, fellow members of Congress and grassroots activists joined her at the Capitol.

The protest continually brought attention to the issue for five days until the Biden Administration decided to act. They announced that the eviction moratorium would be extended to protect 90% of American families, primarily in the places most impacted by the pandemic.

Without Cori Bush and her fearless leadership, millions of people would be facing eviction. Her conviction and strength are admirable, and we need to ensure she stays in Congress fighting for us.
