I’m sure you all heard about the historic labor fight in Alabama a few months ago, where Amazon workers in Bessemer led a national headline-making fight for basic worker rights.

Now, there’s another labor fight on the ground that I want to make sure you know about. Alabama mine workers at Warrior Met Coal have been on strike since April 1. Last week, they took to the streets of New York City to demand better pay and benefits.

More than 1,000 members picketed outside the offices of BlackRock, an investment management corporation and the largest shareholder of Warrior Met Coal. You can learn more about the development of the strike here and follow real time updates on their Twitter.

Alabama is a Groundwork Partner State so we have been tracking the progress of this strike and want to do what we can to not only bring attention to it, but also support the workers on the front lines. Here’s a few actions you can take right now to help:

  • Follow UMWA on Twitter and retweet their content on the strike. The more attention we can bring to this issue, the more pressure will be put on those in power to take action.

  • Learn about the strike and why it’s important. Have friends and family in Alabama? Share the information with them so that they can take action at home.

  • Donate to the workers on strike! The UMWA have created a way you can donate directly to a food pantry that is supporting the strikers. If you are interested in contributing, you can donate here.

Thank you for your action in support of Alabama workers. We will keep you posted if other actions come up around this issue.
