More than three decades ago, a trio of medical professionals collaborated on a vision: the creation of a network, including mutually shared resources, to support doctors in their work serving migrants and their families who struggle to get and maintain access to the health care they need. This dream has since given way to Migrant Clinicians Network, a trusted and valued nonprofit that has also become widely recognized as a leading expert on subjects pertaining to the health of vulnerable migrant and mobile populations.
Our roots are critical to who we are. We began as doctors in need of resources for underserved populations. Now, we are passionate health advocates, creating practical solutions to dismantle the barriers of inequity in the pursuit of health justice. Along the way, our changemaking work has brought us into contact with the best and brightest in the world of migrant health.
And now, we ask you, our community, to help us identify and recognize one such rising star by nominating a winner for our annual Kugel & Zuroweste Health Justice Award. Named after MCN’s own Candace Kugel, FNP, CNM, MS and Founding Medical Director Ed Zuroweste, MD, the Kugel & Zuroweste Health Justice Award recognizes the frontline clinicians making an impact at the intersections of health and vulnerability within migrant and mobile populations. The winning recipient will also receive prize money in the form of $1,000.

To qualify as a potential recipient of the Kugel & Zuroweste Health Justice Award, candidates must be nominated by a peer or colleague who can affirm that the individual is still early in their career, and as of yet, unrecognized by any other comparable award or professional recognition. Those wishing to nominate someone should compose a brief essay (no longer than 850 words) explaining how their desired candidate not only meets the criteria for the award, but also embodies the legacy of what the award stands for: courage, compassion, and health justice. These are the same qualities that made Kugel and Zuroweste “beacons for so many of us” in the devoted pursuit of health justice, explains Karen Mountain, MCN’s Chief Executive Officer. “Their legacy, through the Kugel Zuroweste Award, is to acknowledge and celebrate these leaders early in their careers and to engage with them in our mutual passion to help.”

The winner will be selected by a panel of MCN representatives and announced in November, with a ceremony to follow in December.
