John,
This email is a little long, but we have three important items to update you on. Thank you for supporting the East Bay Young Democrats!
Stop the Republican Recall
Join the California Young Democrats: Bay Area Region on Saturday, August 14th at 1 p.m. in the next CYD Bash to #StopTheRepublicanRecall. This is part of a series of phone banks and mobilizations across the state as we help fight against the recall campaign of Governor Gavin Newsom. The recall election is coming up on September 14th, and we are working to turn out Democratic voters and keep the Governor's seat blue! Contact the CYD Regional Director, Victor Flores, at [email protected] if you have any questions.

AD-18 Update
Thank you to everyone who came to our 18th Assembly District candidate forum! If you missed it, you can watch the full recording here. After a long and action packed event, our members in attendance voted on an endorsement and no candidate earned 60% of the votes cast. Therefore, the East Bay Young Democrats will be making no endorsement in this race. We still encourage all of our members to vote in this pivotal election, and remind everyone that Election Day is August 31st.
Housing Endorsements
At the recommendation of EBYD's Policy and Political Affairs Committee, the Executive Board recently voted to tentatively endorse the following items using the expedited process outlined in our
bylaws.
-
California Senate Bill 9 ("California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency Act") - Senate President pro Tempore Atkins et. al.
This bill promotes small-scale neighborhood residential development by streamlining the process for a homeowner to create a duplex or subdivide an existing lot. (press release, fact sheet)
-
California Senate Bill 10 - Senator Wiener
This bill allows local governments a streamlined path to zone infill neighborhoods for light touch, missing middle density — up to ten units per parcel — if they choose. (press release, fact sheet)
-
City of Berkeley Accessory Dwelling Unit Ordinance
On January 26, 2021, Berkeley City Council referred to the city manager development of zoning ordinance and fire code amendments that address emergency access and egress challenges created by new state ADU laws. The Berkeley Planning Commission focused on allowable modifications to ADU size and height limits. (council referral, commission response)
-
Policies that support independent redistricting commissions
Members have seven days as of this notice to object to an endorsement under this process, therefore pushing the contested item(s) to the next available general membership meeting. If you have any questions, please contact Policy Director Ruben Hernandez Story at
[email protected].
All the best,
Bret Hendry
