Friend,
It's been 50 years since Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was founded in Paris, in 1971, by a group of journalists and doctors. With 45,000 staff representing more than 160 nationalities, MSF is a unique place where people from all backgrounds and walks of life interact, exchange, and debate.
All members agree to honor the guiding principles in this charter.
You help to uphold these principles, Friend, as a supporter of MSF's work—so we want to share them with you too:
We offer assistance to people based on need. It doesn’t matter which country they are from, which religion they belong to, or what their political affiliations are. We give priority to those in the most serious and immediate danger.
Our independence is rooted in our funding; more than 97 percent comes from individual private donors like you. We strive to freely evaluate patient needs, access populations without restriction, and directly deliver the aid we provide.
We do not take sides in armed conflicts. Our priority is to put patients first by providing care where it is needed most.
Neutrality is not synonymous with silence. Our proximity to people in distress puts us in a position to raise awareness of their plight to ultimately help improve their situation. We may seek to bring your attention to extreme need and suffering when our teams witness acts of violence, when crises are neglected, or when conflict gets in the way of delivering aid.
We are accountable to our patients and to donors like you, and we are transparent about the choices we make. Evaluations, critical reviews, and debate on our practices and wider humanitarian issues are all part of our work.
This email was sent from the U.S. section of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), an international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
