Welcome back to the July edition of The NEWsflash, a collection of some incredible stories and events that happened in Northeast Wisconsin this past month. My staff and I enjoyed having the opportunity to visit more small businesses in our community, meet with local veterans, and join farmers to learn about how they're implementing new soil strategies to protect our environment and make their operations more efficient.

Celebrating 150 Years: On July 12, my team had the opportunity to take part in the GLC Minerals LLC 150th Anniversary Celebration. GLC Minerals LLC is a Green Bay family business that opened in 1871. It has since grown to 48 employees and launched GLC Integrated Services. Here's to 150 more years of business in our community!

Meeting with Veterans: My staff along with State Representative Elijah Behnke and State Senator Eric Wimberger had the opportunity to attend a meeting with the Oconto County United Veterans Council. It was fantastic to once again bring together the veteran service organizations from Oconto and provide updates on veteran issues and new benefits. Meeting with and being able to represent so many veterans with amazing stories is an honor.

Biking for Bravery: Nearly 1,300 people took part in the 16th annual Pearly Gates Veterans Ride on July 10. The event is a fantastic way to support veterans in our community and helps over 30 local veteran organizations, including the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 224, The Brown County Veterans Services Fund, and Disabled American Veterans.

Unveiling: My team sat in on the Cellcom Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on July 16 to celebrate the opening of their new location on Holmgren Way in Green Bay. Cellcom provides nationwide service to its customers and has over 50 locations in Wisconsin and Michigan.

Happy Soil, Happy Crops: Early this month my team learned about interseeding and managed graze practices from Tauchen Harmony Valley and J&J Mueller Farms at the Farmland to Shoreland Field Day. NRCS, WDNR, Tilth Agronomy and UW Extension staff helped educate everyone in attendance on the watershed and how different seed species and tillage practices impact run-off and infiltration.

Unlocking the Locks: After years of collaboration between federal, state, and local officials, as well as other community leaders, the Five Locks System on the Fox River in Kaukauna became a reality. This project will allow us to continue to share the incredible views along the Fox River in our community with the rest of the state, and also give local officials better tools to protect the environment. I was proud to join Jeremy Cords and Ron Van De Hey from the Fox River Navigational System, the Wisconsin State Secretary of Administration Joel Brennan, State Rep. Jim Steineke, and Kaukauna Mayor Tony Penterman for the opening of the locks on July 13.

Supporting Heroes: My team attended the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Oscar C. Boldt Wellness Center for Veterans on July 22. The facility is named after a World War II veteran who served as a B-24 navigator in the Army Air Corps. The new wellness center has modern workout equipment and veterans will have access to physical therapy provided by ThedaCare. At the ceremony, the Knights of Columbus Color Guard performed the Posting of the Colors. Learn more about the opening HERE.

Young and healthy: On July 27, my team had the opportunity to attend the NEW Community Clinic’s 50th anniversary celebration. The clinic provides comprehensive healthcare to community members who are underserved and uninsured. The organization started in a second story apartment and now there are six locations that serve over 10,000 people. To learn more about their new $4.5 million facility, read more HERE.

Expanding Tech: My team sat in on the Northeast Women in Technology Annual Meeting on July 12, where they were able to learn all about what the organization does and celebrate the 2020-2021 season. Women in Technology is a non-profit organization that aims to help women of all ages grow in and obtain technology related careers.
