Dear friend,

As we build this campaign, we often get the important question, “What differentiates you from your opponent?” When it comes to Jason Smith, he and I couldn’t be more different, and his environmental policies are one area that really demonstrates the choice that voters have in 2020.

Jason Smith has unilaterally voted for bills and policies that hurt our planet, and has voted against every bill that protects our environment. For example, here’s a brief overview of his record on this issue:

  • In 2019, he voted “no” on HR 9: Climate Action Now Bill, which requested that the President of the United States comply with the Paris Agreement.
  • In 2018, he voted “yes” on HR 1119: SENSE Act, which eased emission limits for coal power plants.
  • In 2014, he co-sponsored HR 5078: Waters of the United States Regulatory Overreach Protection Act of 2014, which prohibited the EPA from fully implementing the Clean Water Act.
  • In 2015, he said he thought the EPA should not only be defunded, but also eliminated.
  • In each election cycle, he has taken large contributions from Big Oil and Big Energy, including ExxonMobil and Chevron, two of the top 20 companies behind global carbon emissions, a leading contributor to climate change.

Tackling the climate crisis is a big, complicated problem, but what I support is simple: clean air, clean water, clean energy, protections for our farmland and forests, and developing industries that bring good, clean jobs to our local economies. I will always vote for policies that protect our environment, and I will always stand up to the corporations that seek to hurt our planet.

Climate change is real, and it is directly impacting our community. We must take it seriously, and so must our Representatives. If you’re with me on this, please consider a donation.
