[1]Real Justice
Hey John, today we
want to start something new – a monthly report back about what we are
accomplishing together as a movement.
Here’s why: we always want you to know how much we can accomplish
together, and hold our staff and leadership accountable to you, the people
who make all of this work possible.
Here’s what we accomplished together in July:
We raised $77,855 from nearly 3,000 grassroots donors for Lee Merritt’s
campaign for Texas Attorney General. This means Lee will be off to a
strong start, and able to start contacting voters now in his campaign to
transform the Texas justice system.
We also endorsed DA candidates in Manhattan and Santa Clara — two
incredible champions who will make their offices work for real justice for
all who interact with them.
The DAs we’ve helped elect dug in to make real change.
Thanks to the bold leadership of San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin and State
Senator Sydney Kamlager, California just made it easier to hold police
accountable. They passed AB 127, a historic bill that allows DAs to
pursue charges against police who break the law, even when other officers
refuse to assist. (This is just one more reason we made 300,000 phone
calls to San Franciscans asking them to stand with Chesa, and stop the cop
union’s recall campaign.)
In Texas, Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales is working to exonerate 3 people
who were wrongly convicted based on evidence planted by a police
informant, and a new study showed that Dallas County DA John Creuzot’s
decision to stop prosecuting people for marijuana possession in 2019 has
led to fewer arrests and thousands kept out of the carceral system.
Philly DA Larry Krasner's office awarded grants to three community
organizations who are working on violence prevention and started a youth
restorative justice program that focuses on accountability while keeping
young people out of the carceral system.
In Massachusetts, Suffolk County DA Rachael Rollins — who was recently
nominated by President Biden to serve as Massachusetts’ U.S. Attorney —
has worked to overturn thousands of convictions linked to the Boston drug
testing lab where Annie Dookhan and Sonja Farak spent years falsifying
drug analyses.
Our team is dedicated to winning the change we need to end police
violence, and provide every single person the true safety they deserve.
Thank you for being a part of this team with us.
