Friend, This week was the 56th anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. By outlawing many racist Jim Crow era voting practices, the bill's passage in 1965 was a watershed moment for civil rights in America. If the last two years have shown us anything, it's that the fight for equality and the freedom to vote isn't over. From Michigan to Georgia to Texas, extreme Republicans are working overtime to stop people from voting. Many of these laws are explicitly directed at taking away the freedom to vote from people of color. At a time when Donald Trump and his acolytes are relentlessly attacking the foundation of our democracy, it’s more important than ever to stand up for the freedom to vote.
