Dear Friend—

Here we go again.

Earlier this year, you helped us lead the fight against an attempt to remove a number of books in a Texas school district. Dozens of authors—including Margaret Atwood, Jacqueline Woodson, and Jodi Picoult—used their voices to hold the line, and with your support, we kept the forces of censorship at bay.

And then Thursday happened.

Leander Independent School District has announced a new slate of books to be removed. This fall potentially thousands of kids in Leander, Texas won't have access to Carmen Maria Machado's In the Dream House, Ashley Hope Pérez's Out of Darkness, and Laurie Halse Anderson's Shout, among 10 other books and graphic novels.

HELP US FIGHT BOOK BANS

Now, I'm appealing again for your support. Your gift to PEN America today helps us rally the voices of writers and readers nationwide to say: Enough of book bans. Banned Books Week is coming up this September, and we're planning events and actions across the country to push back against a small minority of people who want to deprive children of the vast, imaginative, sometimes-challenging world of literature.

Won't you help us support the freedom to read for all?

Sincerely,

Jonathan Friedman headshot
