With the freedom to vote under assault, we need federal democracy reform legislation now more than ever. But right-wing lawmakers continue to abuse a Jim Crow-era Senate rule, the filibuster, to attack our freedom to vote and our democracy.
We’re running out of time to enable voting rights protections to be implemented before the 2022 midterm elections. We need the Senate to act immediately to eliminate the filibuster and allow voting rights legislation to move forward.
It’s become clear that without ending the filibuster, the Senate will be unable to pass two of the most critical pieces of voting rights legislation of our lifetimes: The For the People Act (S. 1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Together, these bills would strengthen voting rights and access and would right recent wrongs – in both our courts and in our state houses – that will lead to voter suppression if not swiftly corrected.
Far-right members of the Senate have already filibustered the For the People Act once this year, overriding the Democrats’ unified vote. We cannot allow the Senate’s most extreme far-right element to ignore the voice of the people, particularly that of disenfranchised voters and voters of color.
We must not continue to allow the filibuster to continue to block progress towards democracy, justice, and equity. Democrats have the majority in the Senate – now they must eliminate the filibuster and use that majority to pass legislation that is imperative to the future of our democracy.
