The Senate is moving forward with President Biden’s infrastructure deal, which is full of big spending and non-infrastructure liberal pet projects. Despite all of the promises that the bill would be fully paid for, the Congressional Budget Office now finds that this spending bill will add $256 billion to the federal budget deficit over the next ten years.
At the ACU, we are committed to investing in America’s future, without bankrupting the nation, and without saddling future generations with the bill for Washington’s spending sprees. Thank you for taking a bold stand with us as we advocate for fiscal responsibility. Our message and our principles are needed now more than ever!
Here's a look at everything we accomplished this past week at ACU:

David Safavian, ACU General Counsel and Director of the ACUF Nolan Center for Justice, co-authored an op-ed with Pennsylvania State Rep. Mike Jones (R-York) that was published in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Titled, Delaying Probation Reform Hurts Pennsylvania’s Public Safety and Pocketbook, the editorial calls for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to fix its broken probation system to increase community safety and save taxpayer money. Rep. Jones is no mere legislator. With a 100% ACU rating in 2020 and a 95% lifetime rating, he is one of the most conservative members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly.

Last week, ACUF sponsored a discussion on criminal justice reform at the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City. With over 700 state Legislators in attendance, members of ACUF’s Prosecutors Advisory Council shared their experiences of how they have been able to prioritize reforms from their positions as elected DA’s. While maintaining a keen focus on public safety, these elected DA’s have shown it is possible to reform the criminal justice system in their jurisdictions, allowing them function more efficiently and effectively. Watch the full discussion featuring David Leavitt (Utah County, Utah), David Sunda (District Attorney, York County, Pennsylvania), and Kent Volkmer (District Attorney, Pinal County, Arizona), moderated by Former Acting Attorney General of the United States Matt Whitaker, here.

This week, Pat Nolan spoke to the Arizona Justice Alliance, a group of high level professionals working for CJ reforms in Arizona. It was a very productive meeting, and they will be excellent partners as we move forward on reforms here in the Grand Canyon State. He also met with Rep. Quang Nguyen, a hard-core conservative, who is his representative. He just returned from the ALEC meeting and was very impressed with the lunch with prosecutors. He will be a key ally going forward in the Arizona House. Also, Pat did an interview with the Pacific Research Institute about ways to improve public safety in California. He wrote a chapter for them on crime for their soon to be released book, "Fixing California". The timing of the release couldn't be better with the pending recall vote on the Governor seeing as crime is a major issue now.
