On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act into law.
The Act was a monumental step in the fight to secure civil liberties for every person in this country. It was the culmination of the Civil Rights Movement and showcased the power of a determined people in pursuit of justice.
It is an achievement that should be celebrated. But we should also be reminded of the long and bitter fight behind the Voting Rights Act β one that is still happening today. Just last month, the Supreme Court issued a decision that seriously limited the scope of the Voting Rights Act.
The people who fought for the Voting Rights Act knew how crucial suffrage was. Now it's up to us to make sure that their hard work isn't left behind.
