Today and Monday, we commemorate the 76th year since the devastating atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We encourage you to join us in taking action to prevent the use of nuclear weapons, or “weapons of mass extinction.” According to the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, we are closer to a nuclear disaster than we have been in decades. Proliferation and increased fire power mean that life on earth is unlikely to survive another nuclear conflagration.

Further, nuclear energy leads to nuclear weapons proliferation, which is one of many reasons why AGREE is fighting for a carbon-free, nuclear-free future.

TELL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES TO OPPOSE NUCLEAR WEAPONS

Don’t want the U.S. government to burn money on nuclear weapons of mass extinction?

Please contact your state and local government representatives and ask them to sign onto this letter to President Biden and Congress calling on them to set policy that will step “back from the brink” of nuclear war. By signing this letter, local officials are using their influence to pressure President Biden and Congress to oppose nuclear weapons and fund human needs.

Find your NY state representatives’ contact information at nyassembly.gov and nysenate.gov, and your Onondaga County representatives’ contact information at ongov.net/legislature.

Despite the fact nuclear weapons are illegal under international law, the U.S. spends nearly $70 billion annually or $10,000 every 4.5 seconds on nuclear arms, using resources that communities like ours need for pressing issues like pandemic prevention, climate change mitigation, and housing insecurity.

This event will remind us of the horrors of nuclear war and promote the “Back from the Brink (BFTB)” campaign and other actions to prevent nuclear weapons of mass extinction from ever being used again. Please wear a mask if you plan to attend.

Today, several members of the Nuclear Free World Committee of the Syracuse Peace Council dropped a banner reminding us all of the dangers of nuclear war.

Get Involved:

Get involved with the national Back from the Brink campaign, either as an organization or individual, here!

The national Back from the Brink campaign calls for the U.S. to:
1) Renounce the option of ever using nuclear weapons first in any conflict.
2) End the sole unchecked authority of any president to launch a nuclear attack.
3) Take U.S. nuclear weapons off “hair trigger” alert.
4) Cancel the U.S. plan to replace its entire nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons.
5) Actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals.
